Right ho. I'm not an expert at all but I've just been through the process and I'm starting my degree in March so something must have gone right!
Explaining why I want to study?
Well to be a midwife, after having my DD with my care being great.
Be careful. Your dd is teeny tiny so to sat you want to be a MW after having her makes it sound like you got up this morning and said "I know!". What did you want to do before? Obviously I don't know exactly what has made you want to be a MW but I think there needs to be a progression somewhere.
My previous experience?
Well I don't really have any as I worked with horses and agriculture before.
In what way? I don't think a complete career change matters really. Think about what transferable skills you have from that and how they will strengthen your ability to work as a MW.
My long term aims?
What do you see yourself doing? Community or hospital? Specialist in any area (teenage? infant feeding?),
My hobbies and interests?
When listing these don't just give them a huge long list, show things that will make you look good but it is OK to pop a little sentence about relaxing with a book or some knitting in too to show you are not always on the go and liable to keel over with exhaustion at some point!
A lot of people do that course to try for midwifery. You will need experience too so start talking to people and see what you can do. Good palces to start could be your hospital maternity services dept, here we have maternity services meetings every 2 months that anyone can attend which are a great way to find out more about how things run. Also your local surestart, if you bf then perhaps peer support training so that you can work with pregnant women and new mothers offering support. You may also be able to shadow a MW but don't hold your breath on that one!
I know you are currently just applying for the access course but you need to think ahead, you will be competing for places alongside a lot of other mature students and a whole load of really enthusiastic teenagers who have so get things in motion so you can honestly show the things you do as being long term interests and not just started to stick on your application form.
Good luck!
