What am I doing wrong with my terries? - poo everywhere!

I am using plain square terries which I fold and motherease airflow wraps. I have tried lots of different folds but with all of them his poo seems to leak at least half the time (still fully breastfed so quite runny!). Last week we went away for the week and he wore disposables and didn't leak once Sad but I really do want to stick with washables... any suggestions of which fold is best, or other things that might help? He is 5 months.

I used terrys when my were babies - used the kite fold with nappy liner and plastic cover pants - it was years ago!

Can't remember having recurrent leaking probs

chipmonkey · 11/04/2006 00:02

I use terries when I run out of pocket nappies and find the kite fold good as well. Its also less complicated than some which seem to require superb origami skills!

Tots Bots are more expensive but are great for not leaking. You can pick them up quite cheaply on ebay especially the nippa variety.

have used Bambino Mio from 5 weeks and have never had any poo problems worth mentioning. you can sometimes get them on e-bay if you don't want to spend much.

eidsvold · 11/04/2006 07:04

use terries with dd2 - kite fold with plastic pants called pilchers. I did have a leak once - used the next size up (rather than the size she was in) of plastic pants and so had gaping around the legs.

Use a nappy nippa and pull the terry very firm around the hips.

beartime · 11/04/2006 07:07

a lot of times it seems to come out the back - could that be cos its not tight enough?

OP posts:
beartime · 11/04/2006 07:16

oh and there always seems to be gaping around the legs because the front bit seems tighter than the back, so if I do it up tightly enough to close the back in, then the front of his thighs gets a red mark on them Sad

if you do it in a sort of triangle you can sort of roll it up round the legs to get a very snug fit and then pull the flaps over to et a snug fit round the waist.

Make sure the wraps are fitting well - they go a long way to containing poo. It may be that the wraps are not the right shape for your baby and another make would suit better.

I use a Rikki wrap with terries, I find it keeps the nappy in place better, and also more likely to contain poo than the Airflow. I like the \link{http://www.thenappylady.co.uk/Advice/Instructions.asp?InstructionID=2&index=1\the jo fold}, but the Nappy Lady does have instructions for other folds to try, there is one called \link{http://www.thenappylady.co.uk/Advice/Instructions.asp?InstructionID=2&index=5\the poo catcher}, which looks similar to the jo fold. Good luck Smile

I used the kite fold years ago with liners and rubbers
it was 20 odd yrs ago though but didnt really notice many leaks tbh
good luck

I have tried doing the wrap up tighter today - I had let it go looser because he kept getting white/red marks, but I think you're right that it probably needs to be tighter. Anyway no leaks today Grin. I have tried the poo catcher and the jo fold, but since advice on here have been doing the kite fold and I like it - it is so much easier to do up and fold. I will try the kite with tighter wrap for a few days and see if there's improvement. Thanks everyone Grin

beartime, looking at some of the sites, the Rikki wrap does seem to be recommended more for terries. I have the popolini popo wrap which is similar and I do find containment fairly good.

beartime · 12/04/2006 07:18

Thanks chipmonkey - if this doesn't work I will try them on the next size up, but can't afford to on this size!

I have a medium size popo wrap you can have for £2 inc postage if you want (sorry not sure of the size but I don't use this one as have 2 many. Was goingt o put it on ebay but let me know if you want it to try it out

gingernutlover · 12/04/2006 09:51

btw this is for 10-20lbs and does up with velcro. Has cute bunnes on it too. In good condition.

beartime · 12/04/2006 13:31

yes gingernut I would be interested in trying it - you can e-mail me on rhoda at f2s.com

Use an absorbent liner, like cotton rags rather than fleece or flushable liners. They absorb some of the poo rather than just let it pass thru... if they're rags, you can just toss them if dirty or wash and reuse.

beartime · 12/04/2006 22:50

what can I use for cotton rags - I don't really have any Blush

OP posts:
gingernutlover · 13/04/2006 10:04

hi beartime - have emailed you so hope it worked. Perhaps old sheets or bath flannels would work as absorbant liners - not sure tho

clop · 13/04/2006 18:39

I just cut up old clothes to make into nappy rags, maybe it's only my kids who manage to stain clothes irrepably.

beartime · 13/04/2006 23:03

well so far since using the kite fold and doing the airflow wrap up tighter I've had no leaks - yay! So thanks for the advice!

bear time - I take it you do not want the wrap then?

eidsvold · 15/04/2006 14:21

bear time - thought of you today when we had the poo from hell - kite fold and plastic pilchers and not a leak in sight..... glad you have had some success.

beartime · 15/04/2006 21:36

gingernut - yeah I guess I;ll stick with mine now since they do seem to be working, but thanks anyway Smile

eidsvold - I have those plastic pilchers but they're so noisy and hard to get off and on and give him red bottom!! So that's why I got the airflows. Great for containment tho' I agree!
