When will he stop having accidents?!

I started toilet training dd1 (2y 7m) over 1 month ago - he has been using a potty or toilet for several months, regularly wakes with a dry nappy, & tells me when he has had a wee and generally showed all the usual signs for being ready.
We started off using "special stickers" as a reward for using the potty in time, along with much praise. Very quickly he tired of the stickers, showing no interest in them at all and now also says "no clapping mummy" when he sits on the potty!
I suggest he uses the potty every hour or so and before we go out or leave somewhere but his stock answer is "no". This is frequently followed up with an accident 10 minutes later.
On average he has 3 accidents per day, somedays more. He has (this week) started to say "wee wee mummy" as he starts wetting and sometimes manages to stop long enough for me to get him to a potty or toilet.
I know you are not supposed to, but I have occasionally pushed him to sit on the potty, usually with an initial fight, then he sits & wees. I don't want to use this tactic as everything I've read says this just creates problems.
I seem to be surrounded by people whose toddlers have toilet trained in a week with only 1 accident! None of the books I have consulted mention accidents continuing for weeks - they all seem to say "stay in for a week & it will be done" which is what I did!!! What am I doing wrong, or are we actually normal and this will eventually come right? I'm so close to giving up and going back to nappies, but I'm not sure if that will cause more problems.

I think possibly you have taken too much control rahter than letting him take the lead and recognizing he needs a wee/poo

I wouldn't go back to nappies as you say he is showing signs of being ready

My ds (3y 3mo) still has accidents sometimes - usually at nursery. When we initally potty trained him we let him walk around with no trousers with a potty always handy and just gave him praise when he used it - might this be worth a try? It might just stop it becoming a big issue between you.

I don't think you are doing anything wrong - he's still young and it will come in time.

Sympathies - I am going through exactually the same with DS2.
I started training him a good 6 weeks back, but he doesn't seemto be grasping it as well as he should be, needs constant reminders & has several accidents every day.
He has just turned 3 & it is so draining, there have been loads of occasions where I have been tempted to give up & put him back in pull ups, but then all my hard work will have gone to waste.
My DS1 was a breeze to toilet train, so DS2 has come as a bit of a shock!
Your DD is still young & it is promising that she often wakes with a dry nappy. I guess you need to continue with what you are doing & give it time.

Ds is 3yrs 3mths, toilet trained (a second time!) in January, and has gone through 3 pairs of pants and trousers this afternoon alone. Just to let you know you're not alone. Obviously, not in a position to offer advice!

Thanks everyone, it's such a relief to know I'm not the only one still wiping up accidents! The text books give this rosy image of it all being so easy, but my reality is so different...but then isn't that always the way with kids :)

Oh, what a relief to read this thread! I'm on day 9 (or is it 10?) of potty training with dd (2.9) She will usually wee on the potty when you ask her to (eg before we go out) but is still having several accidents a day. Sometimes she starts a wee then says she needs one and can finish in the potty. She still hasn't managed a poo in the potty but is getting distressed if she gets poo on herself (not when it goes anywhere else though...like my bedroom carpet Sad Anyone have any inspirations on the poo issue or basically any other ideas at all! (have been using the sticker chart with mixed enthusiasm from dd and lots of praise when she does wee in the potty)

Hi...i started with my 2.1 dd 2 months ago, she had 3 accidents first day, 1 on second day, then was fine for 2 weeks. Then she had a bad day, co-inciding with being a little poorly. She now wets her panties maybe once a day, but not soaking them and will finish off on toilet. She also categorically refused to use the toilet before we got in car or buggy, usually meaning i had to stop car after a couple of minutes to do a roadside wee! So i resorted to sultana bribery, ie just try to do a wee like mummy always does before we go out, and if you try you can have a sultana, even if nothing happens. Invariably she will wee, not always! However the wet panties thing usually happens if she is over excited, and I suppose she is still learning bladder control and will get it soon. Hope this helps!
