I'm so -pissed off- fed up . Had my little girl a month ago within days of bringing her home we've been hit with a god awful cold and the worst cough. It's took down my son dp myself but I thought she wouldn't get it because I'm bf. ( wrong). We havnt been sleeping in the same room as her, she's just nxt door because we are all coughing so much in the night it was waking her up.
I'm worried about her sleeping on her own now as she's so bunged up but I'm still barking like a dog around the clock.
Any advice on newborns with cough/colds really welcome.
Should I see a doctor??

Calpol do a plug in vaporiser that you put little tablets into and has a blue night light on. When DS was all bunged up I think this really helped him over night.

I also used to put towels under his top half so he was lifted up a bit and not laid flat.

I would def make sure you are sleeping in the same room and, yes, would probably go to the gp as well. Agree with the slight raise of the mattress with a towel underneath but sometimes it just made them slip to the side.

You can get some saline drips from the chemist that can help unblock her nose. You just put one drop in each nostril.

Have you tried karval? Empty a capsule into a jug of boiling water and put it in the bedroom before bedtime. it will act as a vaporiser. It will keep the vapours in the room for at least a few hours.

My DD got a really bad cold when she was a few weeks old. Its horrible seeing them like that. The antibodies from the breastmilk should help her get better quicker too.

I use the calpol plug in anytime DC have colds, think they're really good & do help.

We also use snuffle babe - it's like a baby version of Vicks that you rub on their chests.

Hope you are all feeling better soon.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 03/12/2012 23:36

You don't want her cold going on her chest, good advice from earlier posters but lots of horrible colds going round already this winter. If she shows any trouble feeding or if in doubt please take her to the GP.

We use the Karvol Vapouriser, Snuffle Babe and either Nasosal drops or Saline Nasal spray - the spray was better than the drops.

I too would definitely make sure you are sleeping in the same room, and raise the head of her crib/cot/moses basket by putting a book under the feet. It is safer to raise the end of the bed rather than just the mattress or just the baby.
