Hiya

While my baby is drinking his milk the teat seems to collapse and go all squashy, does anyone know why this happens?

Vaccum in the bottle - he may need a faster flowing teat that allows more air in.

It is a vacuum, you can fix it by not tightening the lid quite so much.

Oh I see I think it's my fault because I put a dr brown teat in an Avent bottle because I'm having trouble trying to find the right teat for my son 2 is too slow and 3 seems a bit fast he drunk his bottle in 7 minutes but it didn't seem to bother him, if I keep him on teat 3 do u think he will get used to it and know its a faster teat so he don't have to suck so hard??

When you change tears they tend to make a mess at first but get used to it after a couple of days

If you are using Avent bottles then try the Avent Variflow teats. They do 1,2 and 3 flow in the one teat. There are markers on the teat and you line whichever flow you want up with the baby's nose.

I have these for my DD due to reflux/Gaviscon in the bottles and they are brilliant.

The teat is probably collapsing because Avent bottles and teats are designed to go together for the valve system in the neck of the bottle to work - a different brand teat will stop the valve working which builds up a vacuum. If you want to use Dr Brown teats you need to use the Dr Brown bottles as well.

Teats can also start to collapse when they get older, and then they need replacing. Recommended they be replaced every three months, but I found Avent ones do last last longer.

Thank you very much for all that information it has been so hopeful and I have to admit I bought the variflow teats the other day but I really had no idea u had to line the right line up with the nose, I will try this tomoro number 2 tears seem a little slow and the 3's are so fast he cries when it's gone, I will try the variflow tears again as now I know how they work silly me! If not I think I will have to keep him on teat 2. Can I tell me how long u think your little one takes do drink a 7 0z bottle?

DD was always quite quick, although using flow three made her sick, she would drink 7oz in five minutes on flow two. Now she's older she has 9oz in about the same time.

If he's drinking fast and crying when it's gone then I would think about giving him 8oz. Usually if a baby is completely finishing every bottle it's a sign that they may be ready for a little more.

Newmummy12 · 03/12/2012 08:46

Well with a teat 2 he leaves about half an ounce and seems very satisfied he's only been crying with teat three cuz it's gone within 5 minutes when he usually takes about 15 mins. I'm just so confused on what to do, it's making it harder aswell due to his thicker milk because he's still on aptamil comfort. And although his colic has gone I'm still a bit worried to change him on to follow on.

There's no real difference between normal milk and follow on, it's just a marketing ploy. It sounds as though he enjoys the sucking itself, which isn't surprising. Does he have a dummy?

Newmummy12 · 03/12/2012 16:08

Well I don't think I'm going to switch him but the only reason why I was going to put him on follow on is because the aptamil 1 gives him very very runny poos and alot of them. No he don't have a dummy he just takes it out of his mouth and plays with it. I think I'm just going to have to leave him on teat 2 and try to make the hole a bit bigger.

If you only want to change it because 2 is slow then unless it is bothering him I'd leave him on a two. If you make the hole bigger he might as well be on a three. If they get the milk too fast it can give them colic too.

DD has thickeners in her milk for reflux and a 2 on the variflow has been fine for her. The three makes her puke even now.

There is no need to use follow on milk, my HV told me not to bother and DD was on stage 1 until she turned one and went onto cow's milk.
