Temperature at night

Not sure if this has already been done, but I really need some advice. I HATE keeping the heating on overnight, it makes me too hot and sweaty, the boiler kicking in wakes me up, it's such a waste of gas etc. However last night I got up at 3am and it was 15 degrees in my DS's bedroom (2.7). He wears a vest and long sleeved pyjamas. But his nose and hands were cold. He has a 4 tog duvet and although last night he was still covered, more often than not when he turns over he kicks it off.
What does everyone do?
Super fleecey pjs are not really an option because I can't afford them, and when DS goes to bed at 7.30 it's 19-20 in his room so he would be way too hot!!
I should add that our radiators are not equipped with thermostatic valves and the thermostat is situated in the coldest place in the house (entrance hall), which means basically the heating is either on full blast or off. When we're at home in the day we have to keep turning the thermostat up and down to adjust the temp. We're renting so nothing can be done to change this.
I am so Confused

Any chance you can get hold of an oil filled radiator with a thermostat for his bedroom? Thats what we use and it does make a huge difference.

Is your DS waking because he is cold?
Or are you just concerned because he feels cold to you?

DejaB00 · 29/11/2012 09:31

Yes sorry I should have said he does wake up several times a night on particularly cold nights, whereas normally he sleeps right through. I wondered if 15 is too cold or if I'm being silly? We have thought of an oil radiator, although we are very very short on space in the bedrooms...

We're having this problem in my house at the moment too!

Have bought my three year old a proper, warm single quilt (which looks way too big for his toddler bed Grin) and given my one year old his old 4tog quilt which he sleeps in with a fleecy blanket on top.

I usually put the baby to bed and find he is quite warm at that point, however a few times I have been woken up in the night to find he has thrown the covers off and feels cold to the touch so have started putting socks on and a hot water bottle in with him when we go to bed about twelvish which seems to do the trick although I was initially worried about overheating.

Ds's room is frequently 15 or 14 in the winter (sloping ceiling with no scope for insulation). 15 is usually when I break out the radiator. If he's waking up several times a night I would be inclined to find room for a little rad.

ceeveebee · 29/11/2012 09:36

Can't you put the heating on but turn the radiator off in your room?
Although tbh I don't think 15 is all that cold.
Are you using flannel sheets on bed, and could you go back to a grobag if he keeps kicking covers off?

ChestnutsRoastingonaWitchesTit · 29/11/2012 09:41

15 is fine in our house but its not draughty, i thinkthat makes a difference.

I have my ds who is 22 months in a vest, long sleeved pjs, a 2.5 tog sleeping bag then a fleece blanket and a toddler duvet on top. The covers just go up to his waist, leaving his arms and head to air.

Our ch comes on if the temp gets lower than 14.5 at night and his room thermometer usually reads a low of 15.

He sleeps soundly since we added the fleece layer, before that he was waking cold. last night was the first proper frost we've had here but hopefully his room won't get much colder.

Have you thought of warming his bed up first with a hot water bottle?

DejaB00 · 29/11/2012 10:08

Thanks everyone for your advice. When he first goes to bed he is plenty warm enough so that's not the issue. Even when DH and I go to bed the temp in DS room is about 18 which is fine.
I don't really want to have the ch on as it will heat up the whole house, and I'm not going to go round turning every radiator off at night and back on every morning! I think I'm going to try the hot water bottle suggestions and see how that goes. Failing that sounds like an oil rad might be the way to go Smile

Is the window in his room single glazed or draughty? A close fitted and inter-lined roman blind might help keep the heat in if so. Failing that perhaps go back to a grobag so he can't kick the covers off - they go up to quite big sizes (age 6 I think) these days
