How old were your DC when you stopped pureeing their food?

Hello, DD is 8mo, just seen on MN Food section that by now her food should just be mushed with a fork. Tried it at lunch, wasn't a success. I puree her meals with a stick blender, and she has finger food after (breadsticks, apple slices, bit of cheese, etc). If I don't keep trying will I end up with a child who starts school still eating pureed food?!

TIA.

Foods just about experimentation at the mo. nutrition mainly comes from her milk. Keep giving her lumpier stuff to play with while u eat n don't make a deal over it. Although you say she has finger food afterwards why not give her what you have? Smile

Pumpkinlatte · 28/11/2012 23:39

Thanks melliebobs. I will give it a go - her purees are basically our food, blended. But how is she supposed to chew something like chicken casserole, she's only got 2 teeth!

Would rather not share my chocolate spread with her - I love her and all that, but still...Grin

Never puréed anything

SamSmalaidh · 28/11/2012 23:50

Never pureed as I didn't introduce solids til 23 weeks so he was fine to chew and swallow by then. He either had things whole or I mashed with a fork.

They don't need teeth to chew things - as you know from seeing her eat cheese etc! For meat I would either give slow cooked things that fell apart, mince, or big strips of meat that he could hold and gum.

Certainly by 12 months I wasn't mashing things anymore, just cutting up things like potatoes or sausages.

LittleBearPad · 28/11/2012 23:51

Same here - no pureeing at all. A few Ella's fruit pouches to add to porridge (or when I can't be bothered). She turned herself orange with the tomatoey pasta this evening.

melliebobs · 28/11/2012 23:57

Ud be suprised how much they can put away with just 2 teeth! Dd is 8.5 month n we just give her what we have (whatever she doesn't have she can make up with more milk) and one of her first meals was bits n peices of a toast dinner! There wasn't much left :o

melliebobs · 28/11/2012 23:57

Roast dinner even

We've never puréed. I'm too lazy Grin

WaterBiscuit · 29/11/2012 00:01

me too, never pureed anything, ever, nor have I ever spoon-fed. Started BLW at 6 months and DD was great with it. Now 9 months and can eat pretty much anything. I was surprised how much and how well she could manage, might be worth a try?

poachedeggs · 29/11/2012 00:04

Didn't puree anything. Easy :)

confuddledDOTcom · 29/11/2012 00:35

Never puréed for three children. Never did anything they couldn't feed themselves. By 8 months two of them were feeding themselves the same food as the other children were having (one wasn't ready for solids at that age).

They have all their teeth, even if they've not cut them, they can use them far better than an old lady who takes her teeth out for meals!

Annabel Karmel states that the purée stage is for two weeks.

ZuleikaD · 29/11/2012 05:42

No purees here either - they're allowed solids when they can pick them up off the table and shovel them in themselves! Don't worry about the no-teeth thing - don't forget their gums are chockful of teeth and VERY hard!

Iggly · 29/11/2012 09:36

No purees at all. Just used a fork to squish from 6 months old.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 29/11/2012 09:38

I never pureed anything. Started weaning at 26 weeks - straight onto finger foods and things off our plate mushed with a fork where appropriate.

chezziejo · 29/11/2012 09:50

Mine was around 11-12 months. Would not tolerate lumpy food, despite hv saying to push the issue or he would never chew. I have up and he went straight solids in his own time with finger food. Barely eats a thing at mo tho which is a worry in itself Sad

MrsHoarder · 29/11/2012 11:41

At 6.5 months DS gummed his way through a strip of beef from our casserole last night. The carrot was less of a hit, that went on the floor, but he was working away at that little piece of beef for about 10 minutes. Good for teething too.

IWillOnlyEatBeans · 29/11/2012 12:50

I think DS was around 12 months. He went from pretty smooth, thick purees straight on to normal pieces of food. I gave finger foods from 6 mo, purees from around 5.5 mos.

Any attempts at lumps/mashed food were roundly rejected (he still wont eat any form of mashed food now at 2.9, even his absolute favourites like carrot and parsnip! Other than that he is a great eater though!)

MoelFammau · 29/11/2012 13:08

I never pureed but that's because DD was not impressed with it. She loved (and still loves) BM but went straight to proper lumps of stuff - ie toast, strips of steak, twisty pasta, florets of broccoli etc - at 5.5mo. I wanted to wait til 6mo but she grabbed my food off the plate and ate it so it was out of my control really.

My DSis did puree though. Her 23mo is still on puree pretty much as he hates texture unless it's chips. Doubt it's connected though. Just shows all kids are different and really, you have to do the least stressful route so the kiddy always enjoys food.

HearMyRoar · 29/11/2012 13:31

I'm far to lazy to puree. DD always had what ever we were eating from when we started weaning at 6 months. I have yet to find something that she can't have a darn good go at (in fact as you mention it we had chicken casserole last night) and she eats an amazing amount. In fact I am sometimes a little worried that she eats far too much for an 8 month old Confused

arista · 29/11/2012 14:07

I did not pureed for long and started giving little pieces of foods at 7-8 months now my baby is nearly 10 months I just give her the food but chopped smaller.

Pumpkinlatte · 29/11/2012 14:16

Thanks everyone! I think maybe I was misunderstanding 'eat' - seems like maybe I was asking too much for her to bite, chew and swallow with everything going into the belly, like we do. I guess as long as some goes in, it's better than nothing - and she's always got her quota of milk every day. Not sure I could cope with her eating our food with her fingers, we've white walls everywhere that are a nightmare to wash down Smile.

Also hadn't occurred to me that her teeth are still useful, even though they've still not emerged. Thanks for that!
