Does anyone use a travel cot all the time?

Hi,

My 12lb 3oz 6 week old DS has outgrown his moses basket. He is very long! We can't really fit the cot in our room and would still prefer to keep him with us at night for the time being. Health visitor has recommended using a travel cot for the inbetween now and putting him in his own room. Does anyone do this?

Thanks xx

I did. I used travel cot from 4-6 months in our bedroom before moving ds into his own room at 7months. He would have happily slept in there longer and seemed comfortable.

To points:

  1. I bought an additional travel cot mattress which was about 5cm thick
  1. My travel cot had a bassinette feature which raised baby up high so I could reach in touch him with out getting out of bed.

Hope that helps :-)

I did too, for exactly the same reasons. DD is 8 now!

Ah yes, the one I have been looking at has a bassinette.

My travel cot doesn't actually seem any smaller than an ordinary cot. I'm not sure how much space it would save. If I was going to use one all the time, I'd definitely get a thicker mattress as the travel cot ones don't look all that comfortable for long term use.

A crib is a bit bigger than a moses basket, if you got a cheap one second hand or borrowed from someone, that should see you through to 6 months.

I used a travel cot from 2-5 months in our bedroom before moving him to his real cot then. He was fine. The bonus is now that he is happy sleeping in travel cots wherever we go and he transferred easily to his big cot as he was used to the space. He slept much better out of the Moses basket.

Our DD preferred her travel cot for a while so she slept in it for a while when she was a few months old. I did start to wonder why I bought a proper cot!!

GwendolineMaryLacey · 27/11/2012 18:00

Yes, used for dd1 and now for dd2 when the little buggers slept anywhere other than my bed. The brand new unused cotbed in their room was too big to move and it was portable rather than space saving, IYSWIM. i did buy a proper mattress for it though.

Definitely get a proper mattress, but otherwise there's no difference between a travel cot and a normal one except the height.

I did from about 3 or 4m to 7m (moses basket outgrown and cot still occupied). I discussed it with the health visitor and we decided it was fine - if it was OK for babies to sleep on for a weekend it was OK full stop. I didn't get a proper mattress as I doubt I woudl have found one that fitted properly. Although the mattress looks thin remember that your baby is very light so not as uncomfortable as if you were lying on it with adult weight.
