Too Much Sleep?

My little one has always been a good sleeper - and I tend to live by the idea of letting sleeping babies lie ..... But just lately I'm beginning to wonder if I need to take some 'waking up' action!!

He is now 2 yrs 6 months and is showing little sign of reducing his daytime sleep. He goes to bed between 1pm and half past (depending on if it's been a nursery morning) and he will happily sleep until 5. His bedtime routine starts at 7pm and he did used to be tucked up for sleep by 7.45 ... however, I'm noticing that the bedtime activities (stories etc) are starting to stretch out a lot longer and last night it was gone 8.30 before he was snuggled down to sleep.

He loves his bed - and very happily snuggles down to get himself off to sleep, so no worries there.

He sleeps round to half 7 or 8am if we don't disturb him - but two mornings a week he has to be got up at 6.45 in order to get to Nursery by 7.30 so I can then get to work.

It really doesn't feel right to wake him earlier than he 'naturally' wakes from his daytime nap - but I think I'm answering my own question as I write ... as I think that instead of naturally taking shorter naps in the daytime he is adjusting his needs for sleep himself - and instead is shortening his night-time sleep.

I suppose I'm just looking for some reassurance that it would be the right thing to do, to start waking him from his afternoon nap and hope that this has the knock on effect of him being more tired at night time bedtime.

What do you think?

I would shorten his daytime nap a little - but take it in small increments. For instance try a week of waking him up by 4.30 and see what effect it has.
