What do you give them? My two come home ravenous and would gladly gulp down their tea - but it's only 3.30pm so i try and drag it out for another 2hrs with fruit or crisp(try not to do this) a brioch

I'm just wondering what everyone else gives - any idea's to give two "STAVING" primary kids

We dont eat until DH comes home at about 6/6.30 so I tend to give: fruit / toast / crumpets / make some popcorn / breadsticks or crackers & cheese / fruit loaf or flapjacks if we've made it. Proabably not the healthiest stuff, but DS is hungry and tired after school so a quick energy boost is needed!

Pancakeflipper · 22/11/2012 12:46

It's whatever I have lots of in. Could be crackers, breadstick and dips, bananas, apples, yoghurts, cake, biscuits. Mine are starving.

Both of mine were like this from the start of primary school though it took me a while to work out why DD(now 9) would throw the most MASSIVE strops on the walk home Turning up at the gate with a drink in one hand and a sarnie in the other sorted that one out most of the time. DS(7) has always greeted me with 'I'm hungry' :)

I always take a drink as they both seem to be thirsty and I try and take savoury things but not always. Things I take include:

  • Pitta bread with ham and cream cheese/or tuna/or chicken (tend to make for my lunch and make a few extra
  • Cold toasted sandwiches - they both love them Confused
  • Cheese sandwich
  • Marmite sandwich
  • Honey sandwich
  • Innocent smoothie
  • Biscuits
  • Homemade cake
  • Flapjacks
  • Donuts from the shop

DS would happily eat many sandwiches at 3.30pm and then not much dinner so I have to be careful not to feed him up too much!
Hope that helps?

DD is 6.since she started school I have brought dinner forward to 4 ish, and give her supper at 6 til 7 in front of tv. She doesn't eat much at school, fussy slow eater. This works for us!

3littlefrogs · 22/11/2012 17:57

I always batch cooked when mine were that age, so as soon as they came in from school they could have dinner if they were really hungry. However, I always arrived at school with a sandwich, a drink and a banana. It kept everyone happy on the way home.

They could also have supper just before bed, if they wanted it.

It is much easier to get them to eat healthy food when they are really starving.

Beanbagz · 23/11/2012 16:20

Crackers or bread with butter
Breadstick/veg sticks & homous
Toasted bakery items (crumpets/scotch pancakes/English muffins) with jam
Fruit
Sandwich
A piece of homemamde cake or a couple of biscuits

It all depends on how hungry they are and what we have in the house. We generally don't eat dinner until 7pm so they'd never last that long.

NotMostPeople · 23/11/2012 16:22

Ok, I'm going to be honest here. Mine get a cake after school most days. If it's not cake it's humous and pitta but tbh it's mostly cake.

umiaisha · 23/11/2012 17:05

I have never bothered with after school snacks and just give mine their dinner at 4/4.30. Appreciate this isn't feasible for all though!

naughtymummy · 23/11/2012 17:13

Not most people, if you can't have a cake at 4pm when you are six then I don't know when you can TBH. Mine have cake too and fruit

lolalotta · 23/11/2012 21:06

My DDs daddy gets into late for us to as a family in the week, so when she reaches school age I plan on letting her eat her dinner when she is starving as soon as we get in from school and then she can snack later on. I think I would rather this than her fill up on snacks...of course I have no idea if this is actually a good plan as she is only 3!!!

lolalotta · 23/11/2012 21:07

*gets IN TOO late for us to EAT together...

spilttheteaagain · 25/11/2012 21:32

Not there yet with DD but when I was a child we used to have cereal & milk as a snack after school. Dinner at 6.15 when dad got home.

valiumredhead · 26/11/2012 12:20

I do tea early at 4.30 - 5pm, no way can ds wait longer and better than filling up on snacks.

wigglesrock · 26/11/2012 12:56

I feed mine for 4.30pm too, I have a 7 and 5 year old and a 21 month old and it really suits us. They have a bit of supper later. We wouldn't eat together in the evening anyway so its the easiest thing to do.

GimmeIrnBru · 26/11/2012 16:14

Nothing. We eat at 4.45pm. No need for snacks. They eat a substantial dinner, also with a pudding/fruit afterwards.

unillustratedmum · 26/11/2012 16:29

My 8 yr old has milk and cookie or juice and fruit as soon as she comes in as she often seems grumpy and picks right up after the snack. She has a big breakfast, a cooked school dinner and then eats another cooked meal at about 5, don't think she would last without that inbetween snack!
