Any other grandparents who are bringing up their grandkids?

The title says it all! Is anyone else in my position, being a full time "mum" to two grandkids, GS aged 3y and GD aged 4m. I wont go on about the circumstances, but just to say its really hard work when you are 46. My grandson calls me "Nanny" rather than grandma because when he was born I didnt feel old enough to be a grandma - my partner also has a pet name.

So when I thought I would be taking things easy, I am doing night feeds all of a sudden. Things have changed a little but most of the principles are the same and our health visitor has been great, she is really on my wavelength. The social worker is about as much use as a chocolate teapot though, but he will be off the scene soon. This website is great for people like me to update their skills, but I would also like to hear from other grandparent carers if that is the correct term.

I'm not a grandparent and I know it is different as you have done this all before but you are pretty young for a grandmother. Many mothers on this site have children this age and are in their early 40's so it is not unusual to be looking after young children at this age.

I don't have much advice but you are welcome and I'm sure there will be others along to share their experiences with you.

I think the difference for peaches27 is that she's already done her bit once!

I'm a nanny too - but I don't take care of my dgs's - only on occasion. The idea of doing it full time - much as I adore them - would fill me with dread!

You have my sympathy, it's shame that at only 46 when as you say, having brought up your own family, you should be taking it easy.

peaches, look out for joash, I think she is bringing up her grandson. I'm sure there is someone else too but can't think who off the top of my head.

Welcome to mumsnet btw (if you are new, and apologies if you are not!!)

Thanks! Youre right, it is different to people delaying starting their family until their 40s. The issue is that suddenly, unplanned, I have two small children. I wouldnt want anyone else to have them given the circumstances, but it is still a bit of a shock.

Anyone else?

Me! I see this is a really old post. Just wondering how it all worked out?
I'm 51 and got my 4 year old grandson pretty much living with us and now there is a 6 month old baby that is highly likely to end up here.
Any advice or thoughts be hugely appreciated OP. 🥰
