Talking to kids about abuse

Hi We have a seven year old whom we have managed to shield from all the recent news about Jimmy Savile etc. But now that the whole subject of child abuse is so much in the news, we wondered about how other parents are talking (or not) to their kids about it. Our son knows about stranger-danger but we have never spelled out in any way to him that abuse exists or what it actually is. (And we are mindful that most abusers are not stranger to the children in question.) When I was young I think we were told about 'dirty old men', but is this or a modern variant -- enough? All thoughts gratefully received.

Does your son's school have the stay safe program?
This might be good way to start a conversation about it?

You could try reading an age appropriate book with him on the subject, one like "Your Body Belongs to You". HTH

We have just really simply explained to our children that if people touch you when you dont want its wrong etc. We dont put the news on with the children around so they havent really seen it but I have tried to make them aware of privacy etc.
