Can you take a 2.5-yr-old to the cinema?

That's it, really.

Would be just me and him.

Tips? or is it a complete no-no?

I'm going to see what the MN verdict is on this too. I want to take DD to see Ice Age 2 (she's 2.5 too) but don't know whether to go this week whilst DSs are in school so I can leave if I have to, or wait until they're on holiday and risk going all together.

Tbh I'd risk going if it's just the two of you, if he gets scared or just plain rowdy you can always leave.

All depends on the child TBH!

Pruni · 03/04/2006 11:06

Idiot's question: do you have to pay for them?

Yes I took dd at 2.5 to the Magic Roundabout, she was entranced, didn't move a muscle all the way through!

We saw Ice Age 2 yesterday, it was great but lots of scenes of extreme peril for animals so if they are v sensitive to that sort of thing then maybe not.

The Little Polar Bear film thatis out at the mo is very gentle and suitable for really little ones.

Pruni · 03/04/2006 11:09

Thanks CD - was IceAge2 I was planning but perhaps not.
Little Polar Bear (absolute favourite) not on here, sob.

I think it's fine.
I have taken ds2 along with my other 2 since he was about 1 tbh.
When he was little he used to want to wander around outside, but now he sits and watches. He's 3 this week. He loved Wallace and Gromit and we have also seen Nemo, Magic Roundabout and other things too.
We go to lots of children's plays too so maybe he's got used to sitting and watching. Certainly he never cries or fusses now (not that that matters that much in a film anyway - you can always nip out for five mins).
Yes you will probably have to pay, Showcase policy IIRC is for over 2s. HTH

Depends on the child, and the film. DD2's was just 2 when we saw The Heffalump Movie, and she loved it, but we saw Chicken Little at half term (she was 2.8 by then) and spent the whole time saying "rubbish rubbish rubbish"!!!! Take lots of bribes!!

sunnydelight · 04/04/2006 20:23

Just PLEASE be prepared to leave with him if he won't be (reasonably) quiet and bribes don't work! Taking a few kids to the cinema isn't a cheap option these days and it really hacks me off when people let very young children run around/shout etc. and spoil everyone else's enjoyment - though I do think the "it's my child's right to express themselves" attitude is particularly prevalent where I live Grin

dependds on kid ime

took ds 2 yrs 8 mo - to narnia - he love the experience more than the film. last 45 mins spent with phantom loo trips and climbing off and on seats because of folding novelty. tbh partly due to sugar consumption. def take again - but with portable potty this time.

Karenann · 04/04/2006 20:51

I didn't take my ds to pictures until he was nearly 4 but I have friends who have taken 2 or 3 year olds to see Nemo etc. They were fine and at the cinemas by us you don't pay up until they are 3 if you say that they will be sitting on your lap if you are asked. Of course there are always empty seats when you get in to see the film IYSWIM!
I am taking my ds to see Ice Age 2 next week - it looks really good.
