Smelly carpet! (AFTER cleaning!) Help!

Grandson is 3 (lives with me) and is normally dry by day but we have an occasional accident. During his training a few little accidents occurred on my lounge carpet. These were always cleaned promptly using a proprietory spray on carpet cleaner and a damp cloth, then blotted dry with an old towel. Everything seemed fine, no particular bad smells

THEN, because he seemed reliably dry I decided to give the carpet a really good clean all over using 1001 and a Bissel carpet shampooer. As it started to dry, all I could smell was wee. It has now dried and I still smell wee. It has obviously gone deeeper into the carpet, lied dormant, and been reactivated! I am so ashamed! It smells vile! Any miracle cures, or do I keep washing and washing?

Hi there, I haven't got any tried and tested methods

as DD is still potty training - but I don't want to find the same when I do clean the carpet properly! Let me know if anything you try works!
It might help if you leave in whatever you apply for 24 hours to give it time to work.
Found a couple of suggestions on the net, not sure if any use as you can't see the stains...

'I would suggest you sprinkle bicarbonate of soda on the stain, leave it overnight, then work gently at the stain with a soft brush or hard sponge. Vacuum up the bicarbonate of soda.
Then make up a strong solution of white distilled vinegar in a bowl of warm water - wash the area well with this and rinse as well as you can. The smell of the vinegar will dissipate after a few hours.'

'If the urine stain has dried repeated applications of detergent, white regular household vinegar, and household ammonia will have to be done until the stain has been removed. The mixture of detergent may be made by mixing one teaspoon of a mild non-alkaline and non-bleaching detergent with 1 cup of warm water. The mixture of vinegar may be made by mixing one third cup of vinegar with two third cup of lukewarm water. The mixture of ammonia may be made by mixing one teaspoon of the ammonia with half cup of cold water.

'Do not use hot water or heat steam-cleaning method on urine stains. This will have exactly the reverse effect. As soon as you apply heat in any type to urine stains, it has the effect of fixing the stain instead of removing the stain.'

HTH....

I have heard the vinegar one before, but I didnt want the living room smelling like a chip shop! I might give it a go. I will have to apply it on the whole area though because it doesnt seem to be localised. I might try the vinegar in a small area first.

Anyone else had this problem?

We had this problem, and I'm afraid we ended up having to replace it.

Waterfalls, I feared that was the case. Didnt want to spend any more on this, though, because we are hoping to move.

In our next place it will definitely be laminate, even though I prefer carpet. We will be doing the training thing again in another couple of years with second baby!

One of my work colleagues swears by Zoflora disinfectant for sick smells. Don't know if it works on wee too...
