What age do you stop taking a pushchair abroad?

I have a 1 yr old and a 3 yr old. In September we're going abroad for 2 weeks, (DD1 will be 3.6). We're taking pushchairs for both because we tend to go for long walks however my 3 yr old looks too large for a pushchair. I was wondering at what age was your child when you decided to leave the pushchair at home.

This would be hard for me i would have to take a pushchair for ds (3.6) as he likes to run away so needs to be strapped in especially being in another country, he does look silly in it though!

Ulysees · 02/04/2006 11:45

Agree DS2 looked silly but it's a godsend abroad. He's 5 now so not needed.

Where are you going BB2?

Pinotmum · 02/04/2006 11:47

Don't want to take one this year as ds will be 3.6 yo. However would take it if planning to walk alot (which I don't) Grin.

we took a buggy for DD1 last summer and she was 3y9mo. She needed it in the evenings when we were out and about.

Babyblue2 · 02/04/2006 11:50

Going to Ibiza. We've been to the same place before and there's a nice promenade. DD1 always gives up walking and gets tired easily and DH always gives in and picks her up. Does their stamina increase when they go to school and have to walk?

We didn't take one for walking - we took one for DS to fall asleep in while we had dinner out at restaurant. It's a good way to have an adult meal out in the evening!

Ulysees · 02/04/2006 12:00

yes, they're very good for napping on an evening, forgot about that.

Hulababy · 02/04/2006 12:32

We took one for DD last year when we went to South of France, although never used it in Disney at the end of our holiday. South of France was very hot and we were having late nights so DD used it to nap in or when tired at night. She was 3y2m.

Wea re actually planning on taking the buggy on holiday to Florida with us this year too, she'll be 4y2m. They are long, hot days and it'll be nice for her to have somewhere to sit down int he queues or waiting for the parades, and int he evening on way back to car. Also good for us to have something to hang our bags on when actually ont he rides :)

Mallarkey · 02/04/2006 12:46

My dd walks everywhere now 4.9 but still take a buggy on holiday. Long days in the sun can take a nap in the afternoon and if out later in the evening can sleep too!

BudaBabe · 04/04/2006 21:03

DS is 4.8 and I always take one when we fly anywhere. Just makes life a bit easier if he is too tired to walk or can't keep up. Off back to Dublin next week and am contemplating not taking it for the first time.

And as others have said they can nap in them in the evening although TBH he is a bit big now to get comfortable.

This is interesting for me because we have a 3 year old and I have pondered this too. Im all for a quiet life and taking it but my other half always huffs and puffs when packing the car ("Its not a charabanc you know" he says without fail). Ive even thought about getting a double buggy cheap for the 3 yo and the 4 month old.

elliott · 04/04/2006 21:52

We have a 4.4 yr old and a 2.4 year old and have only ever taken one pushchair on holiday (maclaren buggy so not that suitable for long walks off road!). when ds2 was younger he would be in the sling or back carrier if we needed the pushchair for ds1, but tbh he hasn't been pushed in a pushchair for about a year, he just walks with us. I think it depends on how good your dd1 is at walking and how useful you think the extra pushchair will be - if you think it will make things easier for you, then I wouldn't worry what other people think!

crunchie · 04/04/2006 22:19

I think the last time was when dd2 was 3.6, but we had to borrow off a friend as we didn't want to take decent one away an she hadn't used one in months.

However we are cruel parents I made dd2 pretty much by aged 3!

hmm, how old is your son?

hulababy · 05/04/2006 22:40

We had a pottette thing when DD was first potty trained (24 months) and carried it around with us for the first 3 or 4 months, but she rarely used it. Right from the start she could hold on for a fair while and would prefer to pop into a shop toilet instead. Did use to carry a cheap potty in the car boot, probably until about 6 or 7 months ago (DD is 4yo now) for long journeys.

hulababy · 05/04/2006 22:42

You mean stop using a pushcahir full stop or on holiday?

williamsmummy · 05/04/2006 22:48

i ask because i know someone who put his 9 yr old DD on a travel potty , still has a pushchair in the home. ( have no idea if used, but is not folded up )

food is cut up, and the use of cutlery is not always required.

when visting the playground, going down the slide, (for tiny children) child supported in case they go to fast.

anyone feel.............slightly uncomfortable with this? or am I over reacting?

Trying to think of praising other areas that are E.G of fantastic parenting, and biting firmly on tongue when I see all the above.
any one else in this position?
ever been asked for advice/opinon, given it, truthfully, only to realise they would rather you lie to them?

brimfull · 05/04/2006 22:57

9yr old in pushchair and using potty....definately very odd, williamsmummy.Unless of course they have very delayed development or something.

Flum · 05/04/2006 22:59

I wee'd in my dd's potty. to show her how to do it. she didn't get it. i got cramp

williamsmummy · 05/04/2006 23:01

Last time was when dd was 3 yrs 2 months and it was only used for carting stuff from hotel to beach (several blocks across a main road) and keeping her off the road. If you can offer a ride on shoulders as an alternative and plan to eat early evening so she won't nod off while you are out, I'd leave it behind.

LIZS · 09/04/2006 11:15

Oh and didn't take a potty in holiday for either except when we were staying in a company apartment and dd was still under 2 and showing interest in using it. With ds took a fold-up seat until he was about 4 but not with dd who used toilet pretty much straught away.
