I fell over carrying 2 week old in a sling. It was on rough ground and I landed right on top of him. He went pale, and fell asleep, just one little cry. A & e trip to check him out but even that weight landing on top of him caused no damage.

BellaVita · 23/10/2012 21:07

Don't feel bad.

I fell down the last 6 stairs with Ds1 when he was about 3 months old (now 15)

I knocked the phone off the side onto Ds2's head (he was in his car seat on the floor ready for me to put him in the car) when he was around 4 months (now 13).

MimsyBorogroves · 23/10/2012 21:17

I know someone who stood up to answer the front door to her sister. She forgot her newborn son was asleep on her knees.

He was fine.

SchrodingersMew · 23/10/2012 21:18

I clunked Ds' head on the health visitors scales when he was about 2 weeks old.

Don't feel to bad, I think we've all done something similar at some point.

elfycat · 23/10/2012 21:30

When DD2 was 11 months I tripped over a door on a ship, one of the watertight raised ones. I tried my best to twist as we fell but I must have dropped her the last foot or so and she hit her head. She was OK, big lump but made reassuring protest noises. I thoroughly checked her over (I'm a nurse with experience of children with consciousness issues).

Completely failed to notice the blood running down my leg. I'd taken the worst of the impact but who cares? Not the first or last time that I've dropped one of them but was the worst.

MyGoldenNotebook · 23/10/2012 21:32

Oh it feels awful when something like this happens but you're not an awful mum at all. My DS rolled off the bed at around 16 weeks and DD rolled off the sofa (you'd think I'd learn) at 12 weeks. Both fine as yours will be too. Put it down to experience and take the pram next time x

JW37 · 23/10/2012 22:09

It definitely happens to most of us. Dh was lying on the sofa with our 6 week old ds2 on sun and he rolled off and hit the wooden floor. Thankfully I was out grocery shopping so not around to panic and shout at dh! Tho he also had him in bed with him a couple of weeks ago asleep with a blanket and the duvet up to his chin. I did shout at him for that one!

PinkChampagneandStrawberries · 23/10/2012 22:11

My dad dropped me out of my Moses basket down a full flight of stairs at 6 weeks and I am fine! Don't worry you are certainly not a bad mother.

SofiaAmes · 23/10/2012 22:12

I defy you to find a mother that hasn't dropped/fallen/let fall their children at least once if not multiple times. It doesn't make you a crap mom....just human. Ds was down the stairs head over heels twice before he was a year old (and we had stair gates at the top and bottom). Dd was dropped on her head at least once. And just to add, ds is now 11 and manages to injure himself all on his own these days without any help from me...I was just giving him some practice! Grin

giraffesCantGoGuisingAsZebras · 23/10/2012 22:15

I once bumped the head of a 14mo I was PAID to look after on the door frame. We were on holiday in these lovely log cabins and I was carrying him like a wee baby and tickling him and we were having a great time and suddenly BUMP on the door (my excuse is it was a different place and smaller door frames?!), his poor wee face crumpled! I felt so awful! He is now nearly 7 and adores me!

ExasperatedSigh · 23/10/2012 22:18

My 1yo DD has fallen down our stairs five times, each time while I've been stood at the bottom watching her climb Blush The fourth time, I was actually saying to DS how we needed to stay nearby and watch her because she might fall, and BANG! She seems none the worse for wear, thank goodness.

(not top to bottom, I should add, just the last five or so where the staircase curls round - she insists on climbing the thinnest part of each step Hmm)

SchrodingersMew · 23/10/2012 22:28

Oh, remembered another 1! (And this really will look bad!)

When DS was very little I went for a nap and DP looked after him, I think we were both still in the hazy knackered stage. There was a jug of cooled boiled water to make formula with (I now know you shouldn't do this) and next to it a jug with sterilising fluid in it. DP made up a bottle and fed it to DS, guess what jug he used?

It was my DGM who noticed when she went into the kitchen and seen it half empty, went into panic and told DP. They phoned NHS 24 who put them through to Toxicology at Yorkhill and it turned out it was pretty harmless.

All fine. :)

weirdalien · 23/10/2012 22:39

Mine was not accident of falling or tripping (that really can't be helped). I ssshhh don't tell while enduring having lovely day out with DF and DSM, accidently tied the dog to DS pushchair instead of the picnic table. Dog saw another dog and went to run after it. Pushchair tipped up. Blush I think I cried for a week over how bad a mother I was/am. DS fine and I have now almost forgiven myself. I had had no sleep the night before, yr honour.

straighttohellymelly · 23/10/2012 23:10

The speeding car was very scary yes, I just managed to pull dd back, the car swerved, the people on the pavement went grey, and thankfully it just missed us by about an inch. I had to call dH at work and get him to walk up to meet me as I was just standing crying, I couldn't walk home, was too shaken.

gastrognome · 24/10/2012 11:48

I fell down the stairs while carrying my 2 week old DD2 and 2 year old DD1 at the same time.

Dropped both children, baby landed head first on the stairs. Luckily (after rush to A&E) no damage was done.

Falling over - with or without children in your arms - doesn't make you a bad parent! When you are tired it is much easier to trip/stumble etc.

matana · 24/10/2012 15:05

At 9 weeks, i tripped carrying my DS on an icy walk up a waterfall in Ullswater (not literally up the waterfall, but you get what i mean). At 5 months i didn't strap him into his bouncy chair and he chose that moment to haul himself forward and topple out, head first, onto the tiled floor. At 7 months, he fell off the bed. And at 18 months, he fell downstairs. All. The. Way. Down. They're resilient little things (thankfully, in my particular case!) and won't remember it when they're older. Incidentally, DS broke no bones and wasn't permanently damaged on any of these occasions. On the other hand, I have been left a quivering wreck and can certainly empathise with you. But give yourself a break - there will be lots more bumps, bruises and falls to come.
