Every single time for the past month or two, changing DD's nappy results in crying, twisting, kicking, screaming, and a real battle. I have treid distracting her in a million ways and even chaging her nappy with her sitting up, nothing works, she is 14mo....I am half tempted to bin the bloody things and get a potty. The older she is getting the harder it is esp as she is very strong as it is.....arrrggghh.....its even more of a nightmare when we are out of the house....

When mine was this age she was the same I found it easier changing her while she was standing up.

TheBlonde · 27/03/2006 14:16

We have similar issues here
I fight to get the nappy off without poo going everywhere

I try to give DS something to hold whilst I change him as that gives me a few more seconds of him lying still

donnie · 27/03/2006 14:22

I have this with dd2 and she is only 10 months! she just gets covered in poo as do all her clothes, it drives me mad. If I give her something to hold/play with that gets covered in poo too!
no solutions but comisserations!

I found it was easier to change DS standing up as well. It does end eventually (although I am sure it will start again once DD learns how to do the whole squirming routine).

Try one of \link{http://www.edirectory.co.uk/pf/pages/moreinfoa.asp?pe=CICEAHDQ_+rabbits+baby+safety+changing+mat&cid=880\these} !!

cece · 27/03/2006 18:19

I used to lie ds on floor and put one of my legs over his body to 'pin' him down. Then do a very quick change!

milward · 27/03/2006 18:20

alib - good tip here - thanks

DumbledoresGirl · 27/03/2006 18:20

They are all like that aren't they? I used to give my babies something they weern't really allowed like the open sudocrem pot and found that distracted them long enough to whip a nappy off and sling another on.

2Happy · 27/03/2006 18:23

OMG ds 9mo is just like this. The number of times I've chased after him as his poo-covered bottom wiggles off across the room. The added bonus is he always grabs at his bits when I take the nappy off, so if they're poo-covered... And this is going to get worse when he can walk by the sounds of your post?! Agh!

Sparklemagic · 27/03/2006 18:31

another vote for standing up! Buy pull up nappies and do it standing up, this saved me from so many battles....

lunarx · 27/03/2006 19:35

i distract ds (21 months) with a book. and yes, pull-ups can be a lifesaver ;) (but i dont trust them at night!)

nulnulcat · 27/03/2006 20:07

battling like this for months i dread having to change nappies as i know it will be a battle and we are failing big time on the potty training but this week we have a new trick i tell her to put her knees on her nose and she thinks she is being really clever! no doubt novelty wear off soon and back to the shouting battles!!

greyriver · 27/03/2006 20:52

now pull ups could be a very very very good idea.......but how do pull ups and poo work? isnt that v messy?

lol about the open sudcrem pot, thats sooooo true, between that and the vaseline pot both with lids off that prob would keep dd laying down!!

Buy soemthign like Easy up pants/convertibles rather than the potty training pull ups which hold less as they are deisgned ot ctach accidents not as a regular nappy. They have a tearable side so you can open them to remove them but tbh by then I could usually take them properly without too much mess.

Nbg · 27/03/2006 20:57

I had this from 6 months with dd and she went straight in to pull ups. No messing!

donnie · 27/03/2006 21:02

love the look of those harnesses alibubbles! I may well invest in one.

alibubbles · 27/03/2006 21:08

donnie, I can get you one at a lot less.

Agree DS went into pullups & changing standing up at this age.

With poo he had to lie down to take nappy off and wipe, then could stand up to put clean pullup on.

Have been able to do pooey ones standing up for a couple of months now (DS has just turned 2) as he is able to understand & stand still for a few seconds now!

maisiemog · 28/03/2006 00:57

My ds was like this when he was about 7 months, it kind of peaked around that time, and now at 16 months he has calmed down a lot, he's been walking a while and crawled from 6 months, it's like he had to get it all out of his system, but now he knows he can go wherever he wants he lies still much more.
If he is a bit distracted I tend to hand him the remote control for the tv or the phone, anything he isn't allowed normally and then do a quick change, plus tellytubbies on the box.
When he was at his worst I used to do a lot of standing up nappy changes, wipe him standing up and put on cream standing up.
I found that rather than wiping him, sometimes it was easier to carry him to the bathroom, bum outwards and then dunk him in a sink of water.

picnikel · 28/03/2006 15:28

Thank goodness dd isn't the only one, am getting very good at standing nappy chnages but have had to stop using my fluffles because I can't cope with doing them up with a nippa standing up. Back to trusty MEOS!!

leggymamba · 28/03/2006 16:00

I can do sandy's standing up but how do you get the wrap on so everything is covered? Find I can do velcro quicker than poppers but then have to do vest really quickly so ds doesn't rip it off. When I invested in cloth nappies it seemed a good idea - nice little baby lying still! Am tempted just to use them for nursery - It's their problem then!

maisiemog · 28/03/2006 21:17

Yeah, poppers are the way forward with the legging it baby. I use cotton bottoms wraps so velcro, and you do have to get it covered up pretty quick. However, my ds can also unfasten disps whilst his vest is ON. Shock
Sometimes I find putting the nappy on my knee and then ds on top helps a bit, he doesn't mind being on my lap as much as on the mat.
I honestly think it's a phase though, they become more helpful and less crazed (apart from hyper pre-bed madness)

crazycanuck · 29/03/2006 15:51

I started a thread on this very topic this morning in'behaviour'. Glad to see I'm not alone and commiserations all around!! I recently invested in some bamboozles and the faff of getting them on a standing wriggler is getting to be a bit much! oh please bring on the potty soon... :)
