How to get schoolgirl out of pull-ups at night?

DD1 is 4.75 - started school in January - and still happily wears pull-ups at night (dry in the day for 2 years now). Have been waiting for them to be dry in the morning before trying without, but they never are (she was still having occasional daytime accidents until recently). Not sure whether she's just being lazy or really doesn't know she needs a wee (she's a very heavy sleeper), but she says she can't do it, even though the loo is right next to her room. Haven't tried before due to many big changes for her during last year - new baby sister, starting school, etc., but now everything has settled down, maybe we should try? Have also been reluctant for selfish reasons, as still waking at night to feed baby so don't really want to be woken to change sheets too! Any advice would be welcome!

I wouldn't worry about it for a while. My ds is a similar age and still in pull-ups at night. There are quite a few previous threads on this topic and the general consensus is that there is no point in doing anything until they are quite a bit older - they need some hormone to kick in before they can be dry at night. Like you I'd rather keep using pull ups than have wet sheets every night!

However, I'm planning to wait until the weather is warmer so I can get sheets dry outside and ds won't need a quilt so it doesn't get wet, then I'll probably try again with a pampers disposable bed sheet thing under the normal sheet. My HV did say I might need to be prepared to put up with wet sheets for a while until he makes the connection between waking up wet and needing to go to the loo.

my son is nearly five and im still having probs with him wetting the bed. Tried everything from restricting drinks to getting him up but nothing is working. He hasnt been wearing pull ups since jan and i hoped that if he had an accident he would feel uncomftable but this hasnt stopped it either. It is fustrating as i had a girl in nov and she is going through the night and yet i am getting up changing sheets so i dont know what to try next. maybe they do have to grow out of it !!

I know some children who were 8 before they grew out of bedwetting - but I dont want to embarass them by identifying them on mn...Wink

I know at least two five year olds still in pull ups at night, and its not like I have done a survey in the playground.

My 4 year old has only wet the bed three times Smile however, in the last three days he has poohed his pants about seven times Sad So all very different and no doubt they will all grow out of it...

I wouldn't worry too much about it. My ds aged 5 has just come out of pull ups. The thing that has helped him, apart from maturity is drinking at least 7 cupsof clear fluid a day upto 6pm. He takes a water bottle to school and has it in the classroom. It means his bladder is working well and ready for a rest at night. Lots of water and a little time and it will probably sort itself out without any worry at all.

oh GOD ds1 was 5.5

cat my ds wasn't dry when we took him out of pull ups at night either. We spent a week lifting him for a wee at 10 and then just bit the bullet and he went through the night.

I think sometimes you can wait forever for the fabled dry nappy - it's a very different thing when the nappy isn't there.

I also knew of at least three children who weren't dry at night in reception tho so it's certainly not rare.

just to let you know dd went through the night not doing a wee at all. I really praised him this morning. I didnt restrict drinks and didnt lift him at 11 like i usually do so we shall she what happens. Ill keep you posted.

Just to let you know that he weed only once and that was at 6 this morning so i cant put my finger on what has changed. Usually he has an accident twice or three times a night. Has any one tried giving their child a biscuit before bed. Someone suggested it to me said it soakes some of the liquid . Dont know if its true!!!

My ds is 5.1, and I would'nt even think about trying him yet, I know he is no where near ready.
