chocolate and sweets are different things!

My SIL has given up sweets for lent, but has insisted she can have chunky kit kats as they are classed as wafer biscuits in asda!!!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 23/03/2006 11:09

What a daft argument.

Good on your DS for giving up chocolate/sweets though.

NannyL · 23/03/2006 11:09

if he has given up chocolate how can popcorn be chocolate?

Id also say popcorn is NOT sweets

can he have toffe chesse cake / toffe sauce on ice cream? if he thinks so then id say he can have toffee popcorn! Smile

could he hve plain popcorn as a compromise, as this would be a healthy snack rather than sweets?

Mazzystar · 23/03/2006 11:11

Is he going to be a little puritan. Bless him for taking it so seriously!

cheesecake · 23/03/2006 11:15

Sorry I didnt phrase that correctly . my older son has given up chocolate for lent and my younger one has given up sweets . the older one is saying that popcorn is sweets and that the younger son cant have it . i say popcorn isnt sweets . My friend says it is because it has toffe stuff on it .

Popcorn is not sweets - it is a corn snack. If you take into account the toffee this is just melted sugar so would mean all sugar must be given up for lent too - taking it a bit far?!

alexsmum · 23/03/2006 11:20

save the arguing and buy some corn and pop it yourself and let him have it plain.def not sweets then.

Hallgerda · 23/03/2006 11:59

Salty popcorn would definitely be OK. If you've actually bought the stuff with the toffee on I'd argue that it doesn't count on the "corn snack" grounds suggested earler. Such excuses are part of a long tradition - barnacle geese could once be eaten at Lent because people believed they started life as barnacles so were really fish.

BettySpaghetti · 23/03/2006 12:02

Blimey - hes got will power. My DD said she was going to give up chocolate/sweets as they'd been discussing it at school -she lasted 24 hrs !

I think popcorn is fine in any form

pablopatito · 23/03/2006 15:15

No. Popcorn with salt and/or butter is fine. Popcorn with sugar/toffee is definately not!

elmie · 23/03/2006 22:14

My sons have both given up white bread and crisps for Lent, which they have kept, so far!
Maybe you should get him some salted pop corn or sweet. But I don't think toffee is chocolate. so tell him its OK!
It is really good kids are doing Lent. It shows they can go with things and they are strong. Don't worry too much. He is just making a stand.

Giving up stuff for Lent is just daft b/c of that. I always got out of these kinds of arguments by 'taking up' something for Lent instead. Like extra prayers. But what my folks didn't realise is that I was selfish, and most of my extra praying revolved around begging for that special dress, shoes, hat or summer holiday.

lavenderfraggle · 23/03/2006 23:23

in my opinion good on anyone who gives up something for lent, especially little ones. Even if they don't quite suceed the initial thought is there and the fact they try is good. i would say popcorn is 'popped corn' and not chocolate.
Also think kit kats are wafers covered in chocolate - unless your SIL said she was giving up 'chocolate' for lent jarm i think she is right especially if thats what the supermarket classed them as. did you give anything up? if not don't knock those who try
