Psychotherapist Rachel Morris meets the Davis family, and helps mum Lorraine understand why her young son Cleon spends hours a day on his Playstation. Rachel and Lorrraine seek help from an advertising agency, with its inside knowledge of what makes kids tick. Inspired by the ad men, Lorraine tries several tactics to wean Cleon off his games. Along the way, they prove the power of branding on children's minds by marketing a quartet of classical musicans to the kids as the latest rap band.

I'm not watching - no telly, which gives my children some immunity from advertising Wink. I agree with you though - any mother who would go to an advertising agency to find out why her son is playing for hours on a playstation is seriously loopy. Does she have no lockable cupboards in her house?

my eldest is. only allowed to watch cbbc and cbeebies or videos, but dh lets him have channel 5 on in the morning when they get up early together.
realised how influenced he is when we were in the supermarket and he pointed out some proccessed shit(can't remember what it was) and said' oh look, xxx-they're yummy and every child loves them'!!
couln't help but laugh as the adspeak came out of his mouth!

pablopatito · 21/03/2006 10:38

"dh lets him have channel 5 on in the morning when they get up early together."

Well you couldn't deny them both the brilliant Hi-5 could you?

SoupDragon · 21/03/2006 10:40

"Look, there's the AA. It's only £39"

Nikkinoo · 21/03/2006 10:49

DD pretends to be carol vordeman advertising for first plus, she uses fridge magnets as props when talking about affordable low cost loans. I am very worried!!

Still it highlights DDs obvious acting abilities Wink am pretty sure she gets it fron citv as we dont have sky or she doesnt watch that much telly apart from when cooking tea, we are more of a music family

MerlinsBeard · 21/03/2006 10:52

my ds can recall the entire confused.com ad Shock its actually very funny, he is also in love with "harold" vorderman and loves the picture the loan ads!

all from nick jr i wwould like to add and he only watches 2/3 progs a day!

Flamesparrow · 21/03/2006 10:56

DD has suddenly decided that she wants everything from every advert she sees Angry The wiggles guitar has got to be the most evil thing ever - and that is the one that she keeps going on about even when the advert isn't on.

I didn't realise that adverts would be so effective, so young.

Flamesparrow · 21/03/2006 10:57

Nick Jr annoys me with all the loan adverts - they shouldn't be on children's tv....

I have banned boomerang because of the ads. I cannot bear them

My dd pointed to some persil in the supermarket and said 'dirt is good' yesterday.

Wordsmith · 21/03/2006 11:12

We've just signed up to Cable Tv as our freeview box broke down. We have the full package free for 3 months before it reverts to the basic one (ie just freeview) and it's the first time DS1 has been able to watch channels like Boomergang, Nicklodeon etc. I am shocked by the intrusiveness of the ads and the violence of some of the programmes! DS1 (6) has loads of Power Rangers but it was the first time he'd actually watched the programme (on Jetix) and as far as I am concerned it'll be the last.

He loves watching Planet Earth (as do we all) - DH and I watch it on Sunday nights and vet it for suitability before letting him watch it. last week's was a bit gory with pirhanas stripping a fish bare and a crocodile attacking a wildebeest, so we told DS it might be an idea not to watch it as it was a bit gory. When we told him why, he said, "That's OK Dad, I like killing things!"

Sorry just realised this has nothing to do with the thread title...

RTKangaMummy · 21/03/2006 11:29

The programme was actually very interesting

They had a classical music quartet who played Motzart and the ad people made a slogan called WOLFGANG

all the children got very very very excited

they saw all the branding, graffiti, limos, clothes etc

and then they went to a concert expecting a rap band

THEY HAD NOT HEARD ANY OF THE WOLFGANG MUSIC

And their reaction was very interesting

even the boy with the playstation games he realised how much the adverts etc had influenced him

ds can recite the abbey credit card add. and absolutely everything in this house is "fun you can feel" from an advert for floam.

amber5 · 21/03/2006 14:48

Ds 3yo only ever watches CBeebies. he watched Channel5 the other day while i had a shower and when i came back down, he was crying and asking for lollypops and macdonalds. it took me a while to realise he had seen adverts for them. he would not eat his breakfast and was beside himself at the thought of anything but a cheeseburger.
I will never put on anything but bbc again!!

Kelly1978 · 21/03/2006 14:59

my dd wants that language course to learn another language. She saw that on tv today. I said 'we'll see' and so she has now also asked for a barbie and a cuddly toy she has seen on ads! She doesn't take any notice of adult ads though. ds is three and doesn't seem to notice ads at all.

Blu · 21/03/2006 15:04

I saw that programme, RTKM, and thought it was interesting, too. The kids' reaction was fascinating - and the central boy was so intelligent about it all when he found out. I LOVED his exlanation about the interviewers gucci jeans!
The advertising folk were so canny.

oliveoil · 21/03/2006 15:09

influenced yes, but we can all say no can we not?

saadia · 21/03/2006 15:10

ds can quote the debt free direct ad and keeps asking me "what's a phone mill?" he means "bill".

Mercy · 21/03/2006 15:19

Does anyone remember a sweetie thing called Milky Way?

The advertising slogan was something along the lines of 'the sweet you can eat between meals without ruining your appetite'. I still remember the look on my mum's face when I quoted that as the reason why I should be allowed to have one just before dinner! And that would have been at least 35 years ago!

Mercy · 21/03/2006 15:19

Forgot to say, exactly, Oliveoil.

oliveoil · 21/03/2006 15:39

and the Finger of Fudge that was 'full of Cadbury's goodness'. Yeah right!

babyonboard · 21/03/2006 15:40

I remeber a similar program, a woman was £20'000 in debt and bought her little girl baby dior clothes etc..the little girl was ylling 'my favourite clothes is designer clothes'
shudder
