What do you play with your 5 year old??

My ds is 5 and is into knights and soldiors etc, he has the castle from ELC and pirate ship and this is all he ever wants to play with!

He has lost interest in all other toys/games and therefore i havent played with him for weeks which upsets me as i love playing with him (just cannot endure 2 hours of knights battling each other) I find i have to coax him into colouring or reading with me to spend any time with him. But he is always asking me to play Knights and saying i never play with him anymore!

How often do you all play with your 5 year olds? What do you play etc?

My dd has a few board games like snakes and ladders and this really good shopping game. She will also play snap and nought and crosses.

My dd plays a lot more on her own now but still likes colouring, reading with me but if she had it her way we would play barbie together all day, everyday. Painting and cooking are always a good distraction.

i think it's easier to play with dd's. My ds is five and i try my best to do lego (i'm crap at it) saying that, he is turning into me.. we sit in the lounge when we've got our jammys on, light the candles and watch tv drinking hot choc. I try and make biccies and stuff and he loves messing about in the garden, but then again, likes to amuse himself too. I know what you mean though, i feel i'm not fun fpr him

I don't play with my almost 5 year old ds very often. I do a lot of reading with him and we sit and do writing together (e.g. if writing cards or invitations). Otherwise he plays with his brothers (3 and 1.5) or his friends.

If I do play with him, it would be a game like snakes and ladders or tumblin monkeys or we might sit and play on the computer together (there's an educational site we go on).

I absolutely cannot play trains or cars or anything!

My dd loves playing games like hide and seek with me, and also fave game at the mommet is "being teacher" and she likes me to be her pupil ! Also quite often I am patient to her doctor !

Board games wise - attention span still not great but loves "Who's who" and snap !

I play knights and pirates. we get dressed up and sit in a cardboard box pirate ship. He always makes me walk the plank and dd gets to be the crocodile. I don't join in with action figures though as ds is too controlling and refuses to let me do any of the story.

I try and do 20 mins of imaginative play with him every day. We both really enjoy it (I was never really into dollies myself, I much prefer blasters).

Yesterday we made a treasure map which showed the way to the shop and the chocolate biscuits. it was great fun.

DS plays games like that with his friends

I don't get down and 'play' with him that often but we do sometimes play silly things ..like yesterday he was a boomerang and I kept throwing him (well pushing him away) he'd run round the room and jump back on my lap .. human boomerang Grin

mrsdil - i would be having the self-same problem with my ds (same age) except for on ehting - he has a big brother who will happily play with him for hours.
However, when BB is not there (at a friends or whatever,) I do have this problem. I lose the will to live after 15 mins of 'yes, your knight killed mine. Again. Jolly good'' etc.
I try and steer him towards something vaguely craft but related to whatever his latest passion is.. for example, we spent a very happy 2 hours on sunday designing our 'coat of arms' for a home made shiled and then painting it together.
When he was into pirates, I did a treasure hunt round the house for him (I got to read the papers for at least 20 mins while he was searching :) )
Hide and seek is good if you have the energy. Board games mine loves include Junior scrabble, junior monopoly, battleships, pass the pigs and Uno. Out of them all, I favour Pass the Pigs - very easy to pick up and entertaining for all age groups.

Mistymoo · 20/03/2006 13:08

My ds loves playing board games and UNO (a card game). He also loves baking. He would play on the computer all day though if he got half a chance - his dad does play it with him sometimes.

My knights and pirate enthusiasts have managed to branch out into er vikings and barbarians. However they will make lego castles and viking ships which varies the scene a bit or sit drawing knighst and vikings (or aliens) 5 does seema great age for boardgames - got one called frustration which Ds1 loves dearly...
