Toys your 8 month old enjoys

Am looking for inspiration, my 8 month old has stacking cups, 2 of those wooden bead rail things, cuddly toys, books, an awful noisy vtech thing, a couple of Lamaze soft toys, various teething toys and a treasure basket but I'm wondering if she might enjoy some other things but what? She spends majority of her time crawling around and pulling herself up and learning to sit down again and doesn't take that much interest in her toys but is this because she's more mobile or because she's bored with her toys? We don't alternate them but she has different toys that live in different rooms.
What did your kids enjoy at that age?

Mine is 7 months and loves empty bottles i put some juice in to swish around. He also loves a pot and wooden spoon (my grans idea of toy) all the expensive 'learning' toys get chucked to bang the spoon Confused

Books are good, those 'That's not my...' ones are great as they can feel the pages.

I also found the basic toys were the best- dried pasta in a plastic bottle, pieces of material like velvet, silk or cotton and puppets are good rather than just cuddly toys. Also I think at that age I brought a blow up beach ball and a paddling pool and put balls in it- hours of fun!

I used to go to a baby sensory group and it was fab for a bit of inspiration to make your own and test out some toys too. They have a website too with their products and 'approved' ones (whatever that means). Have a look here: www.babysensoryshop.co.uk/approved-baby-products-8-c.asp

DD was never into toys - not that she was bored with them, just wasn't into toys. DS was different - much more into 'stuff'. Your dd sounds like she's not that into toys either - I'd save your money for now, she doesn't really need them.

Yes she loves empty plastic bottles, she has all the household stuff like wooden spoons, metal bowls, fabric etc in her treasure basket. Has anyone got those manhattan wooden balls for their dc?

we have a few of the that's not my books out from the library as well as some other touchy feely books. She's happy enough all day, how'd you tell if a baby is bored? Do they cry?

sauce pans, plastic tubs, duplo to put in them, wooden spoons, my pile of multi coloured silicone cupcake cases...

My handbag is his favourite toy by a mile - but anything with a zip, or failing that, tassles, are good. And boxes he can open like a door. And his door bouncer. And newspaper. Though I feel he lacks good activity toys...

Argos book!

Hours of fun and free!

I just gave her my Evans catalogue which came through the post, she enjoyed that. She enjoys turning the page when we read and lift the flap books too although sometimes she needs a little assistance, board books are great but she struggles to lift the pages sometimes as there's nothing to grasp as such. I need to get her a cardboard box, DH threw the last one out

My 7 month old loves anything that she can climb on and anything that she can shake/bang to make a noise. We therefore bought quite a lot of soft play mats, cubes and slopes which I rearrange e dry couple of days for her to clamber over and some baby band instruments (shaker type things), although she prefers the home made ones in her treasure box.

We also have a huge cheap oil cloth that I spread across the playroom floor (or preferably outside if the weather is good) for messy play, I give her pots with water, sugar free jelly, cornflour etc and just let her explore.

I'm a real book worm, I wish she would enjoy turning pages and reading together but she is quite rough and tends to destroy books....

Like the cardboard box and catalogue ideas

My dd liked a set of chunky farmyard animals at that age (for chewing mostly, also endlessly amused by grown ups galloping them around her making the appropriate animal noise). Other hits were squirty ducks in the bath (she liked them squirted on to her back), bells and a shaker (little ones that were easy to hold), measuring spoons from the kitchen (the type with lots of spoons on a ring) and, if you can stand the mess, rice in a bowl to mess around with (best done outside or on a bid plastic tablecloth).

Cardboard box tunnel! Stick her at one end, then look through at her from the other end. DS loved this and you could tell he felt very adventurous crawling through.

If she's pulling up, then get a low table and just put an assortment of toys on the table.

cloudhands · 19/09/2012 19:32

at this age, my dd loved anything that was not a toy. the box full of cardboard and paper to recycle, tupperware,
she sounds much more on the move than mine was at that age, so perhaps she's more interested in getting moving than staying still and playing with toys.

Dd is 9mo and her favourite toys are a set of real keys (she is teething) and a giant cuddly toy which she tries to eat.

And any paper. She likes ripping my magazines.

And sitting infront of the mirrored wardrobe door.
