Which washing powder...............?

Hi,

Have got 4 kids including 4 month baby in washable nappies. Have just realised ds2 (10) is allergic to the Fairy Automatic I am using. What now? As a family of 6 including 2 stonking great boys with socks.... I think 'Filetti'(sp?) option may be too delicate (only seen small bags) and pricey. Any recommendations please?

Apparently eco balls are great - just ordered some for me and my mum yesterday - and there are a few threads about it on MN. Its expensive to start with, but may be worth it in long run. And I spotted some on ebay yesterday... heres the ones I got \link{http://www.ecozone.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=314\here}

and dd and i are allergic to fairy, surf and persil non-bio...ecover bio is fine, but it is pricey. If you have a wholesaler nearby that you can access, you may be able to get a larger pack of the filetti stuff??

Lmccrean,

Thanks for both those ideas... hadn't considered either...... will you post your opinion of the eco balls on here please if you get the chance?

Thanks Smile..

theres 16 threads containg "eco balls" on MN, if you wanna search (dont fancy linking them all!) i think ive only read one bad review ever (3 out of 5 stars), and they complained about the screw rusting, although i believe that was the old model. They never complained about how well it washed, so assume it was great or we would have heard about it!

Lmccrean · 19/03/2006 11:24

oh, and of course ill let you know ! still use cloth at night on dd, and her favourite pastime is digging her "flowerbed" in nanas garden, so her clothes will be a good test!

fuzzywuzzy · 19/03/2006 11:25

I tried using eco balls for nappies, but they dont get all the stains out. Not a problem in summer as hanging them out in bright sunshine tends to bleach out any stains left after a wash, but a nightmare during winter....

Lmccrean · 19/03/2006 11:27

fuzzywuzzy - did you use the prewash stain remover stuff? it is any good? think its a stick thing, so cant see how hygenic it is to apply on soiled nappies - may stick with the ecover liquid stain remover for such jobs :)

vkone · 19/03/2006 11:32

You could try Bio-D (www.eco-babes.co.uk), I think you can get it in larger sizes, some eco-shops do it as well or if you ask maybe able to get it in for you. They also make most of the Nappy Soaks/Nappy Fresh products as well

fuzzywuzzy · 19/03/2006 11:38

I rinse nappies out and then dry pail them, I run a wash each night.

But the eco-balls as I said didn't get the stains out. Which made me feel icky putting them on my girls.
I didn't use a prewash stain remover either.....

Londoner · 19/03/2006 11:55

Thanks again Lmccrean, lol at your dd in the garden, mud pies next! V. good point about stain stick being no good on 'squishy' nappies, hadn't thought that one through. Have looked on eBay as you did and looks like it works out slightly cheaper than powder washing.

vkone... thanks, I'm off to have a look at the bio-d etc now.... all of these online tips are great too as I don't drive and powder is heavy lol!

fuzzy - know what you mean about not wanting to put stained nappies on the baby.... hmmmm...

fuzzywuzzy - did you ever wet pail the dirty ones? I had an old ice cream tub that I soaked the dirty one in, and dry pailed the rest...only once had a stain stay, and that was cause i forgot to put any detergent in... Blush

fuzzywuzzy · 19/03/2006 12:33

the nappies come out pristine when I use Persil non-bio. It was only with the eco-balls that I ran into the stain problem. So thought I'd let the op know as she's considering using eco balls and she uses washables to.

NannyL · 19/03/2006 13:04

what about surcare? that has no colourings or perfumes in at all

i saw it on offer in superdrug last week... a small size box for 99p... what a bargain!

Londoner · 21/03/2006 15:43

Thanks everyoneSmile,

no Superdrug near me worse luck Nanny otherwise that sounded like a good option......
Went for Ecover non-bio powder in the end as it was on the shelf at my local and it seems okay so far.......... fingers crossed.

I use the aqua balls..I haven't tried it on nappies yet but will do soon as ds2 is due at easter.I found them Ok with whites but if u have staines I add the ecover bleach in powder..to the drawer.also I know I am not supposed to but I add the fabric conditioner as the clothes smell better..against a pure balls wash which can have a funny smell( but not unpleasant)..or if anyone has any suggestion please advise on what to use with aqua balls to make the laundry smelling lovely...

PeachyClair · 21/03/2006 18:30

Ecover is fab and seems to last for ages too (and smells lovely)

Mimixx · 21/03/2006 19:38

Whaterver you get don't buy Somerfield's own brand non bio. It smells so much of perfum that it made my eyes water. Went streight in the bin.
