How can I help DS become more confident?

He is six. Won't join in or speak to anyone at birthday parties, manages to hide at the back during PE or sports days so he doesn't have to do it. Fine with one or two close friends but sticks to my side and seems terrified in group situations even if he knows everyone. I got frustrated with him today because we were at a birthday party,a friend he knows well from school, and I was the only parent who had to stay, he stuck to my leg the entire time and wouldn't even speak to anyone. I felt as though he was being rude in a way. It would seem ok if he was just quiet but ive spoken to him about bring polite by answering people if they speak to you but he can't do that.

I'm shy and unconfident myself so don't know if is just genetic and there's nothing I can do about it. Or is there something I'm found that's making him like this.

You can't force it - just gently encourage without making a huge thing about it. The best thing is to set an example yourself - join things and invite people around.
