Changing naps?

My DS is 8 and a half months old and has always needed several long naps a day. His current routine is that he naps at 8.30am for 1 and 1/2 hours, at 12.30pm for an hour and at 4pm for 45mins. All timings approximate of course.

Recently he seems to be a bit fussy when being put down for his 2nd and 3rd naps sometimes getting really upset. He tends to thrash about if in his cot or tried to pull himself up to sitting if in his pram. His childminder, who only has him for the final nap, has giving up trying to get him to sleep on a couple of occasions so he has skipped that nap.

I'm wondering if he is trying to change to just 2 naps a day as I believe that's fairly normal at around 9 months. (Although I'm also aware it could be teething, growth spurt, milestones etc). If so, what can I do to help this transition? I'm fairly reluctant to enforce anything new that he may not need as he does struggle when tired and I don't want to try and keep him up unnecessarily. Also, how much do your babies nap?

Thanks!

Both mine gave up the third nap around this age and moved to about 3 hours awake before needing a nap. It meant that the lunchtime nap moved to later in the day - more like 2pm.

Yes I would guess a move to two naps would be a good plan.

My dd, 9 months, naps approx 9-10, then 2-4. Asleep for the night by 7pm, awake in the morning around 6/7 am depending on if she was awake in the night for a feed.

A handy rule of thumb is 2:3:4. Meaning nap 2 hours after waking. Then 3 hours before next nap. Then 4 hours til bedtime.
