I've been feeling a bit morbid & wondering how family would get on if I died. I haven't made a will & I haven't got any life insurance. Should I do something?

Yeah, you probably should, I should too.

It is something i have been thinking about a lot, and especially as a single parent, I want to have things sorted for DD, should anything happen to me!

So yes you should!! Grin

i want mine to be more about what will happen to dd, but i have told friends and family, so I don't know if that would just be enough!

I haven't but I should. It does play on my mind that I have not yet got it sorted.

chjlly · 17/03/2006 21:40

yes dh wanted us to when we bought our first house i was only 22 and thought wtf but his father died with no will and there was a lot of problems sorting his estate out as dh knew what his fathers wishes were but the could not be followed due to having no will
The solicitors I work for charge £70 + VAT for a standard will which I think it is nothing for a bit of peace of mind that your estate will be distributed the way you want it to be

blueshoes · 17/03/2006 22:39

A will, most definitely. I assume you have dependents. If so, life insurance is very important to preserve their quality of life. You can also stipulate guardians for your children in your will.

GDG · 17/03/2006 23:07

We've not sorted our will - it's at the top of our things to do. You've reminded me to ring someone about it next week

moondog · 17/03/2006 23:09

Ditto GDG.
Especially important for the people who are not married!

Get it sorted girls!!

GDG · 17/03/2006 23:11

I'm most concerned about what would happen to the boys if both of us died - and I think part of the reason we haven't done it is that we just don't know who to put as guardians. I mean, who wants to take on 3 boys? I don't know, I just don't want to think about it even though I know I should

DelGirl · 17/03/2006 23:13

everyone should but especially if you have children. I was told that if you don't appoint a guardian should both parents die, then the child/ren would be make wards of court until it's all sorted.

GDG · 17/03/2006 23:13

OMG, have to sort it

DelGirl · 17/03/2006 23:14

x post gdg

We did our wills years ago when our kids were quite small; my older brother agreed to be guardian but on the understanding that they wouldn't necessarily go to live with him (he lives over 100 miles away) but that he would be responsible for making some arrangement that would let them continue to live in our town and go to their schools.

The house would have been paid off and life insurance would (hopefully - this was 12 years ago and we had £100K insurance between us) have paid for keep and domestic help for a few years - mind you DD1 was already about 12 at that point so I suppose we were vaguely thinking that they would muddle along on their own after a while.

Luckily we are still here Grin

quelsouci, you must get some life insurance. If you are young it won't cost much to get decent cover.
