Purpura

Hi all, I noticed a rash on my 6month olds leg and went straight to the GP - she gave him a check up and said he seems fine and happy, but thought the rash was a bit unusual (but not distressing my LO at all). Nevertheless she wanted the doc to see it...he said it looked unusual but didn't think it was anything to worry about-but that if it did get worse to obviously get in touch immediately or if it hadn't disappeared in a week to get in touch then. I am reassured by their response but it does still worry me (maybe I am just an over worried FTM!) and wondered if anyone has experienced this too? It is a rash on his calf, small purple blotches that might be Purpura (although the doc thought it might well not have been), or possibly caused by pressure eg leg constricted by sling etc (but also wasn't convinced of this and the sling has never caused this before). He has a slight cold but they didn't think it was related. Just wondered if any wise MNers know what this might be?

Hi there, my Ds1 developed under the skin type spots over the course of about 24hrs when he was 15 months. I wasn't overly concerned, as he was totally fine in himself, but nonetheless took him to GP, who diagnosed ITP, but referred us to hospital to be sure. Hosp did blood test to make sure it wasn't meningitis or something and thankfully it wasn't. They said that it was ITP and that DS's immune system might have been down a bit, as he had had a cold for a few weeks. Therefore the blood wasn't clotting properly as it should at the time, which resulted in all the pinhead blood spots under the skin. They did say that he would look worse the next day or two, when he also came out in loads of bruises, but that eventually things would sort themselves out - this is what happened. We had to go for another blood test a few weeks later, but all was fine in no time. I suppose the fact that he was fine in himself all along meant that I didn't worry too much, but at the same time I was glad I had it diagnosed. Hope this is of help. All the best!

Thank you for your reassurance - it sounds very similar to our little one and it's good to hear about your experience Smile - I am less worried now!
