My nearly three year old won't go near a potty or toilet, is hysterical at the mention of it and is sooooooo ready to be potty trained. Any suggestions??

If they won't go near a potty or toilet, they're mot ready to be potty/toilet trained - makes it a bit tricky :)

Take them to choose theior own potty from a shop?

My son is like this a well, we have started potty training today so he has to get over it. Have tried the nice approach but that didnt work.

Sympathies redwinelover! Ds2 was just the same. I felt he was ready (at 2.11) and spent about an hour persuading him on to the toilet the first morning. In fact, iirc, I ended up just putting him on it. There were some screams, but he was old enough that we'd talked it through thoroughly before and he knew what was going to happen. I think I spent about 3 hours in the bathroom than first morning! I had lots of books in there too, which distracted him.

In a way I agree with Soupdragon, and felt bad about forcing the issue, but by the first lunchtime, he was fine with the toilet. Oh, chocolate buttons came into it too! One advantage was that I decided to skip the potty and go straight to toilet: since he as terrified of both, we might as well just go through that trauma the once and we've missed the whole transition bit. I wouldn't say we've had an easy time with toilet training, but we're nearly there (I think!). Good luck!

Have you tried one of those potties which you can attach the top part to the toilet seat. He can be a big boy on the loo without having to worry about falling down it.

Personally, I would leave it a bit and wait for warmer weather much easier when they don't have so many clothes on.

My nearly three year old daughter can't be persuaded to sit on a potty or toilet for more that 2 seconds. She says done it when she hasn't and then a few minutes later wets herself. She later has the cheekiness to congratulate me after I've been to the toilet. Feel like I'm getting nowhere so will leave things until she starts being more co-operative.

I'd leave it - my dd2 was like this until last Monday - she'd scream hysterically if you tried to get her to sit on the potty or toilet, but she knew exactly when she needed to wee or poo.

i was going to leave it till the summer, however, last monday, she just decided that she wanted to sit on it and we've only had 3 accidents since!

Thanks Ponygirl - it is lovely when you hear that other parents have to go through the same as us. We were away this weekend and we took the potty with us and left it lying around as part of the furniture - when we returned on Monday we put the potty in the living room and whilst she was watching tv she asked to sit on it a number of times and eventually deposited a poo!!! We cleaner her up and congratulated her, gave her clean knickers and she then told me mummy I have wet myself!! Yesterday we managed to get a wee in the potty but this morning in a frenzy, she dribbled a little. It is the wees that are the problem now!!!!
