Yup, in shade, maybe suncream, keep hydrated obviously.

Cheekychops84 · 07/09/2012 12:34

Which suncream? As the one I have for children gives them a rash

Avoid sunscreen, just keep her out of the sun. Something like this might help?

Yes, take her, and keep her out of the sun (I'm assuming your in the UK?) If your somewhere really hot, why not go later on this evening when its cooled down.
Keep offering bm if your feeding yourself, or a bottle - don't know about water / formula if it is hot.

Enjoy it, and please have an icecream for me.

Cheekychops84 · 07/09/2012 17:13

I'm in the uk yes . Will have an ice cream for you and for me Grin

I live in the tropics close to the beach and took DS when he was 3 weeks old. We were in the shade and he loved it. I lay him on the lounger in his nappy and he was fine, just nursed him when he needed under my t-shirt. I didn't use sunscreen though, too little at that age and not needed if you're in the shade.

Now he's 1 it's a bastard nightmare taking him to the beach with all the shite he needs, buckets, spades, hat (which he hates), sunscreen etc. It seems his main aim now is to eat as much sand as humanly possible.

Cheekychops84 · 08/09/2012 14:43

Haha where in the tropics do you live?

In the Caribbean, it's a great place to raise kids just to the outdoor nature of the place and of course the beaches. Its stinking hot right now though, doesn't lend itself well to outdoor living between 10am and 5pm!!!

MERLYPUSS · 08/09/2012 22:29

If you are going on a sandy beach use talc if sand gets stuck to their creases. It dries them off and the sand falls off with it. I use it on my boys feet and bum adna sandy arse must be really uncomfortable. Obviously wash them later but the car ride home is more manageable

We live very close to some beautiful beaches and took all three dc from day one.

Napdamnyou · 09/09/2012 20:39

I also live in the Caribbean and everyone takes babies to the beach but no sunscreen, just lie them on some light coloured towels and keep them in the shade. Toddlers etc all wear UV sunsuits and hats and we go home at 10.30am.

They also get sploshed about in the sea. With hats on,for brief periods.

Second the tip about baby powder and sand.

Pudgy2011 · 10/09/2012 02:21

I'm in Grand Cayman, you?

DH and I spent ages in the pool yesterday with DS, just splashing about and teaching him to swim instead of drinking the pool water. I love taking him to the beach but he prefers to eat sand - waiting for him to start walking and it'll become far easier!

Napdamnyou · 10/09/2012 04:49

Ooh snap!
We should pm, never met a GC mumsnetter...

Mumblemumble · 10/09/2012 05:17

I'm in Grand Cayman too!
(sorry to usurp thread - guess the beach question caught the eye of all the GC inhabitants on MN)

OP yes go to the beach. If its warm your dd will prob sleep the whole time at that age.

Baby sunscreen is awful. I'm always borrowing my son's and makes me so sweaty. As much as possible I cover him in light clothing rather than that stuff.

Ozziegirly · 10/09/2012 06:14

We are in Sydney so DS has been going to the beach from small. His first summer, he was between 3 and 7 months old and I just kept him in the shade, with a hat and cool clothes.

Last summer when he was between 15 months and about 22 months he wore sunscreen every day (banana boat or cancer council do sensitive skin ones and most of the main brands do children's ones) plus longish shorts, a swimming long sleeved top and a hat with a neck protector! Almost totally shrouded Grin

But I'm proud that in 2 years he has never had sunburn despite being incredibly fair with almost white hair, and very pale "english" skin.
