I was wondering if I could get some advise. My daughter is 14 months old and is pretty good on the whole but she is starting to have tantrums when she doesn't get her way or is tired. She smacks bites and pinches. My in laws said I need to sort it out quickly because I'm expecting another baby in six months. How do u discipline a 14 month old and teach them it's not exceptable behaviour. She used to b a dream going out for meals and now refuses to sit still in her high chair but she can't walk yet so it's not like I can just let her walk around for a bit. I'm getting really frustrated and am feeling anxious whenever we are asked to go anywhere. She also crud everytime I put her in her cot, then goes to sleep after five to ten mins of crying. Will this last forever. Suggestions and advise very welcome :)

My dd is 13 months and is fantastic at throwing tantrums. I am sure your inlaws are well meaning, but you can not start discipline training with a baby as young as 14 months. With my dd I have found that distraction works well. We have taught her 'no' in regards to touching dangerous things, she tends to cry, so I cry back at her and it makes her laugh. Other good distractions are things like singing. When she kicks off and I cant soothe her with a cuddle (because she is kicking at me and trying to gouge my face!!) I just lay her on the floor where she cant hurt herself and sit next to her and sing to her or try and use toys to distract her. Sorry, not much help x

Distraction. DD had a few tantrums - not biggies but crying because she wanted something she couldn't have, for example. She's 16mo now and it's a lot less now. I usually say 'ooh yes, it's cool isn't is? But look at THIS (show safer option) - even cooler, no?' And she usually agrees.

So far.
