Nappy rash again

SecrectFarleysNibbler · 01/09/2012 18:08

i posted a few days back about dd's nappy rash. Used lots of sudocreme and it was more or less gone. in the last 24 hours however its returned with vengeance and is very very sore with broken skin patches. Had her without nappy most of the day and a couple of warm baths. Is this something you go to the gp with or are you laughed out of the surgery for turn up with bad nappy rash?? of course tomorrow is sunday :( put some savalon on before applying half a pot of s cream before bed tonight. Just looks soo angry. DD is being very good about it - only really protesting when having a pooy bum cleaned up. pooos have been very runny, slimy and yellow.

Have u tried bepanthen? I find that helps to heal the nappy rash whereas sudocrem just helps to prevent it.

milkymocha · 01/09/2012 18:09

Metanium, yellow tube.
Willwork wonders in a few hours Smile

stainesmassif · 01/09/2012 18:11

Metanium is v good. I have taken ds's to dr for sore bums, they have been given hydrocortisone when rash esp bad.

tried metanium but sudocreme seemed to being doing a better job. Thought Bepanthen was another version of metanium?? but will get some in the morning and give it whirl. Think I will go to the docs on Monday if its no better. Is this teething I wonder? DD 10 months and no pegs yet.

It could be the start of teething the poor mite Sad

The dr's can give you cream for nappy rash. Bepanthen is just a barrier cream whereas metanium is for nappy rash.

SecrectFarleysNibbler · 01/09/2012 18:36

Will try the metanium again tomorrow. So frustrating - we seem to be on top of it and then it just flares again in only a matter of hours.

Are you still breastfeeding? Breastmilk expressed onto cotton wool and wiped on can do wonders for nappy rash.

Nottigermum · 01/09/2012 18:40

A few other tips:

  • use water and cotton wool not wipes
  • Bipenthene is a barrier cream, very different from metanium, which has medecine in it. A
-after cleaning nappy area, wait until area is completely dry before applying any cream
  • Apply only a small amount of cream. Especially metanium, doesn't need a lot and the skin needs to breath.
  • Too much barrier cream will actually have the opposite effect of keeping too much moisture on the skin and can cause thrush and worsen the problem.
Happiestinwellybobs · 01/09/2012 18:43

We had exactly the same problem when DD was teething. The yellow metanium sorted it out completely.

SecrectFarleysNibbler · 01/09/2012 18:48

Nottigermum - good advice, will crack on with the M
Sirboobalot - sadly not anymore : (

Take her to the gp. They honestly won't laugh.they'll be grateful for a quick and easy consultation It could have a secondary infection or be fungal (Dd has had both). They cab recognise it and prescribe the right cream.

Bepanthen is like magic but a few times it hasn't worked for us but prescribed cream cleared it up in a few days.

elspethmcgillicuddy · 01/09/2012 18:51

Strikethrough fail! they'll

elspethmcgillicuddy · 01/09/2012 18:52

That's better!

happygilmore · 01/09/2012 18:57

It can sometimes be thrush, if it is the GP will prescribe an anti-fungal cream.

mummysmellsofsick · 01/09/2012 19:08

Apparently wipes really aggravate it. Def stick to cotton wool or flannels & water. Weleda nappy cream used in spades cured my friend's baby's bad rash.

oscarwilde · 03/09/2012 14:59

Avoid wipes like the plague - hide them well out of reach so you are not tempted when there's an explosion !. Water and cotton wool, with some liberally applied metanium will sort it out within a few days. If it doesn't work, then you need to see the doc. as it is probably thrush.
Ocado do a brand of wipes called Waterwipes which are quite good if not the most gentle texture I've ever come across. Over time children often develop a sensitivity to a brand of wipes that they have had no problem with for months - it doesn't take much.

tootiredtothinkofanickname · 03/09/2012 16:10

I second the Metanium and Weleda advice, they are both brilliant for my DS. I also use the waterwipes, I buy them off amazon so I'm not sure they are the same as the ones ocado sell, but they are good, although very pricey for just water.

Don't worry about your GP's reaction, if it hurts him so much it's definitely worth a visit. I hope the poor mite feels better soon.

SecrectFarleysNibbler · 03/09/2012 17:34

After another bad night we made it to the doc this morning and she gave us hydrocortisone. Had nappy off as much as poss and this has made a big difference and have been washing her under the shower instead of using wipes. its frightening how quickly it goes from something and nothing to patches of raw skin!!! I hope we are back on the mend and if the teeth don't appear after all this I will be well miffed! Thanks for all the advice - ftm syndrome!! :)

Another vote for metanium especially at night when it can stay in much longer.

Might be worth trying different nappies too -friends dc has shocking nappy rash but dd hardly ever does - we use nature baby nappies

mrsmarzipan · 04/09/2012 10:59

Sounds like teething to me. All three of my kids got the most horrendous nappy rash when teething which appeared over the course of a couple of hours and would be so bad it would bleed. This was with frequent changes plus sudocream and air time! Metanium was the only thing that would clear it.
