My dd is 3 in a couple of weeks and I really want to buy her a train set as she loves Thomas the tank etc. Any recommendations? I want one that we can add to and grandparents can buy bits for over next few years. Thanks

The brio one is pretty classic and i think they have a Thomas version. There are stations and all the Thomas characters I think battery operated and child push along ones. You can buy additional track etc
. Ds plays with a Thomas one at his gps but as I didn't buy I don't know re value and day to day reliability etc

I spent ages collecting Thomas Brio off ebay. Saved a fortune as new they are horrendously expensive. You can get a basic set of 1/3 the price and then the grandparents can get new pieces for special occasions. Pretty much all the wooden sets are Brio compatible.

I am dreading re-ebaying DS's set one day as I suspect it'll be a lot of work packing it all back up for the next small person!

DS (also a huge Thomas fan) has the set from Ikea, which is really cheap and completely compatible with the Brio and Thomas stuff. We've then bought him a couple of his favourite Thomas engines and a couple of interesting Brio trains, and he uses the Ikea trains to make up freight trains and Gordon's express train and things...

Tesco stuff also fits with ikea and Brio. Buy lots of cheap track then get Brio for the nice trains and stations etc

They're all good - Tesco, Ikea, BigJigs. All compatible with Brio.

Tesco is great and eBay, but personally only buy the trains from pictures that look Like they might be home made

DS got a big box off ebay for £75 with loads of track, tunnels, bridges etc and lots of engines, some proper Thomas, others ELC etc. We had some ikea already and although it is sort of compatible, it doesn't 100% fit with the rest of it, if the joints have been slightly badly cut on a piece it doesn't fit. He does absolutely love it, but make sure when you do layouts that you don't make the bends too tight, or the train derails and all hell breaks loose Grin. Now he's got the basic stuff we can add to it with occasional new bridges etc or engines which are £££ new.

O that made no sense. It neant to say
Look like they are from homes rather than homemade. I was looking the other day for Thomas trains and there are loads that look well a bit strange and I wouldn't want my ds to play with iyswim
