a lot of the kids I teach play this. No idea if they pay tho.

Turquoise · 14/03/2006 21:05

I let my ds (age 11) but tbh it was a 5 minute wonder and he hasn't been on it in weeks. He certainly never got bothered by anybody suspicious - he's very careful and blocked anyone from speaking to him.

busybusybee · 14/03/2006 21:05

What is runescape? I have no idea!

Hello, stitch! My ds and all his friends are members - and have been for months, if not years - no problems that I've detected, and it is very sociable, in that they talk to each other online.

Milliways · 14/03/2006 21:08

My DS has been a free member for months - along with many friends. I paid him up this month as a well done for getting into Grammar school (£3.20 is a cheap treat!).

He LOVES it, & knows will be withdrawn if homework or music practice not done. He is also addicted to an Alex Ryder book which was his first choice tonight.

He has spoken to "Strangers" to ask advice - where did you get that, how do I do this etc, & has had no trouble. He knows no personal info to be given etc. He has just completed a few new quests and has lots of new costumes & armour.

How old is your DS - maybe they can chat?

stitch · 14/03/2006 21:08

all the boys in his class seem to be playing this. i thought it would be a five minute wonder as well, but its still going strong.
whenever anyone not from school comes up to him, he says yes i will be your friend, then attacks them!
busy bee, its a game in which they go on some quest type thing. or the other. like playstation games, just online.

DS1 and DS2 are very keen, but are not paid up members. One of DS1's friends is. Apparently members can make pineapple pizza. I worried initially about the messages the game might be sending out after hearing DS2 say "There are some women. We can attack them!" but it went up in my estimation after my sons discovered that runescape women are tough! I have not heard of anyone meeting dodgy people on runescape, though I have told my children to be careful about chat as I realise there may be a risk. I would be more concerned about whether your son would get value from the £3.50 a month, and whether it would encourage him to spend too much time playing the game in order to get his money's worth.

busybusybee, it's a multiplayer computer game for children to play online. They can learn fantastically useful skills such as run smuggling.

Piffle · 14/03/2006 21:14

ds 12 loves it, he has paid for a guide but is not paid up as member

Hallgerda · 14/03/2006 21:14

Whoops, that should have said "rum smuggling"!

Milliways · 14/03/2006 21:17

DS finished ALL the available free quests, but has 100's of new ones now as a member. He does things to practice his agility, his pickpocketing! etc etc. The fighting is not at all gory (like Grend Theft Auto etc), you just loose Hit points - like Dungeons & Dragons used to be.

stitch · 14/03/2006 21:17

Smile thats what i thought!
but it also teaches speed typing?

Thankyou for enlightening me Hallgerda

:o at rum smuggling being a fantastically useful skill!

Milliways · 14/03/2006 21:20

Stitch, if his schoolfriends are playing you can turn on "Private chat" where you can only chat to known people. Public chat can be left off. However, part of the game is a trading floor where you trade items - so some interaction will usually take place.

HenniPenni · 14/03/2006 21:28

Flipping Runescape!! Both DDS 2 and 3 are hooked on it. They would spend hours playing it if they were allowed too (but their not cos it would eat into my valuable mn time Grin). They also play a play ground version too.

trinityrocks · 15/03/2006 18:00

Hi, I am asamed to say that I actually am a paid up member of runescape and if your ds wants to be a member I don't see any reason not to pay the monthly fee. It's not really that much and there is sooooooooooooooo much more he can do as a member, he won't need to be on longer to get his money's worth he will just enjoy the time he has on it all the more. I have never found any horrid people on it and I think at 9 he is old enough to understand that he musn't give out private info. If I were you I would let him become a member Grin

stitch · 16/03/2006 09:31

thank you all Grin especially trinity rocks!
i shall do the deed later today!
do they take amex?

No, good guess though, we liked that one very much, but he had fallen in love with the one he's at - WS, if you can guess that one!

Aha - if I've cracked the code correctly, DS1's going there in September!

trinityrocks · 18/03/2006 20:16

people not on your contact list CANNOT contact you unless you have public chat turned on. You can turn it on and off at will and then only contacts can talk to you when it is off
