How do I make bottles of formula when I'm out for the day?

I'm getting conflicting advise about feeding LO when I'm out. I have the ready made SMA formula bottles and want to decant these into a sterilised bottle when I'm out but I've just been told that my sterilised bottle won't stay sterilised when it's in my bag...how does everyone else feed their babies out and about? Do I need to buy those (expensive) throw away steri-bottles?

i just used to take the sterilized bottles with me and decant. If the lid has been sterilised I wouldnt have thought it would get that germy in a day.

It never affected my 3 anyway. Sometimes too much hysteria about these things and new mums worry themselves to death.

DawnOfTheDee · 30/08/2012 10:28

Agree with LavenderOil. Take out sterilised bottles and decant.

Well when my dd was a baby (15 years ago!) I had Avent bottles and the teat was protected in the lid. It was all still sterilised until you take the lid off. There was a segmented plastic tub for measured powder milk. Easy. Unless......don't tell me it's all changed and I was risking her health???!!!

Thank you! I am worrying about EVERYTHING! My mum just told me to make bottles up and put them in the fridge and they'll be fine! There is no way I can do that lol! I'm sure I'll relax more when I get in the swing of things!

I just take the sterilised bottles and decant. It's not ideal but I think any risk is minimal.

AndieMatrix · 30/08/2012 10:42

Decanting into sterilised bottles never hurt my two!
And as far as making up and putting in the fridge goes: put them in the coldest part for no more than 24hours. Once mixed and not in the fridge the feed is ok for 2hours.Or it was 3 years ago anyway.lol

I second the advice about decanting into sterilised bottles, as long as the lid is on they should be fine. The ready made cartons are very practical, although more pricey. You can also measure the right amount of powder into a dispenser, and carry hot water with you in a thermos flask. This was easier to do when DS was into a sort of routine so I knew roughly when he would feed, so I had time to make up his bottle and cool it.

blondiedollface · 30/08/2012 10:54

Advice changed re: fridge changed 3 years ago so hundreds of thousands of parents 3 years ago were 'putting their children at risk' yeh whatever, just put them in the fridge and then take them out with you!

We make up bottles and put them in the fridge. They come out with us from there if it's a couple of hours; I've been known to put freezer bricks with it to stretch that time.
If we're out longer it's an empty sterilised bottle and pre-measured powder, occasionally a flask of hot water also (I'll usually know there's going to be a kettle available).
There's also a spare empty sterilised bottle and a carton of formula in the change bag for emergencies.

WillowB · 30/08/2012 22:37

Same as YBR. I use a tommee tippee insulated thingy to keep the bottles cold.
Did you know that SMA do sterilised spouts to attach to their ready made formula bottles? This means you ont have to take empty bottles out with you. I think they're £1.49 for 2 and you can sterilise and reuse them.

cybbo · 30/08/2012 22:42

I used to take out sterilised bottles of cooled boiled water and a little tub that I'd measured the scoops into. It had a swivel lid that you could turn to access the powder in each section. It was great

NoComet · 30/08/2012 23:00

Given the present advice about water having to be at 70°c I'd make up at home and take in a cool bag for short trips. Easier to faff with water temp at home.
Longer trips or hot weather powder and flask or UHT.

Sterilised bottle will be fine.

Massive fuss made about making up formula vs tiny risk.

blacktreaclecat · 31/08/2012 09:12

I thought that once sterilised and reassembled with lid they were sterile for 24 hours.
I take a tommy Tippee bottle warmer which is basically a thermos, full of hot water and make up feed fresh. The little powder carriers are good too. You just need some cold water to cool the bottle then.
If you want to keep a made up bottle cool the koo di fridge to go is brilliant.

DevaDiva · 31/08/2012 10:17

I too used to take out sterilised bottle already with the water in and add the powder when needed am shocked to hear I was risking my DCs health Grin SMA have done a brilliant job of convincing everyone they can't do this anymore Grin

Jackie432 · 31/08/2012 13:31

Thanks everyone! At least I know I'll be able to actually leave the house now without having to worry about getting back every 4 hours for feeding time!
