When I was looking at cloth nappies for my baby I read loads of stuff about the bleach and chemicals that are used in disposables plus how horrible the plastic is for trapping moisture around their delicate skin and causing nappy rash. So it got me thinking about sanitary towels - aren't they practically the same idea? I felt really sorry for subjecting my bits to such horrible materials. Then I for to looking at alternatives such as cotton pads and cups.I think I prefer the idea of pads, the cup sounds messy and I'm a bit clumsy. I figure I can just chuck them in to wash with many nappies. My question is how many cloth-bummed babies have a cloth-bummed mum? Any opinions/recommendations?Btw I'm EBFing so not had to try anything yet.

Sorry I didn't give the thread a name - the perils of typing on your mobile!

I could not be a cloth bummed mummy. Washing a babies poop is one thing, but washing blood out... No thank you! And I am a nurse so not exactly squeamish.

I am heavily pg at the moment with DC3, with a pelvic floor that has seen better days, and would consider washable inco pads, but not sanitary towels

Too late clearly! There are loads available! Not for me though.

I work in haematology so I am pretty much surrounded by other peoples blood all day, but I admit they do seem a bit icky to me too, the cup even more so.
It's weird, especially since we spend our days getting covered in somebody else's poo, wee, sick & snot!

I'm a cloth mummy, not icky really though i have a seperate bin and mesh bag for them, they go in the wash on a cold wash first then i chuck the nappies in for a hot wash.
I didn't really have much choice though i'm horribly allergic to sanitary towels ( i was to nappies too) and not a fan of tampons.

cerealqueen · 28/08/2012 11:21

I've got washable pant liners but that is all. How about a menstrual sponge?

Notgrownupinmyhead · 29/08/2012 18:19

I was thinking of using washable fanny pads too. DH had a stoma and various other massive wounds that needed dressing and cleaning so the sight of my own gloop doesn't bother me. Once this Ds gives me ma womb back (working on it now) and ive stopped the bleeding ill be investing in some.

Im not into the idea of using a cup, just the washable pads. Theres loads on the market and i think you can buy a starter kit for under £100.

ValiumQueen · 29/08/2012 18:26

A menstrual sponge sounds yucky Grin

£100 for a starter pack? Seriously? That is so expensive!

Notgrownupinmyhead · 29/08/2012 19:11

Yeah, ill find the info and pass it on. They had maternity pads too but I didn't fancy the idea of that.

Notgrownupinmyhead · 29/08/2012 19:18

I was wrong. Half that price. Blush

ValiumQueen · 29/08/2012 20:18

They look pretty easy to make. I may make myself some panty liners and work up from there. I am sure they are more comfy and better for your delicate bits.

trix377 · 29/08/2012 22:11

I googled the sponge & it came up with loads of cake recipes! I'll smirk if anyone offers me a slice of jam sponge from now on.

I'm convinced - so I've ordered a selection. Just one each from honor your flow, luna pads, party in my pants & hannahpad. They are all so pretty.

Excellent. Will you report back and let me know how you get on? Grin

I am a tight cow will then look into buying some.

ValiumQueen · 30/08/2012 16:36

Love the sound of party in my pants!

nickelcognito · 30/08/2012 16:45

i use tampons (haven't started yet post birth)

i hate towels because i hate sitting on the moisture.

ShortMama · 03/09/2012 22:31

I use cloth pads, I got mine at earthwise girls, spent less than £50 on everything but I got a few bits first, tried them out, then went back for more of the ones I preferred. Mind you I shop for nappies like that too!

SarryB · 07/09/2012 12:10

I would use cloth pads if I had periods (bless you Cerazette, for taking them away!!). Or I'd use a moon-cup.

trix377 · 07/09/2012 22:17

The pads all arrived last week. Despite not actually having a period yet, I have still tried them all out!

I can't comment on absorption but I think the most comfortable/ least noticeable is the Hannahpad. It's only as thick as a regular pad and soooo soft.
They're all quite similar in size.
When my period returns I will update on any leaky issues!

Perfect thread, I'm looking for pads too. I've googled a few of the brands you've been mentioning. I've found some hannah pads in the UK on ebay so I'm going to buy a couple to try.
I like the fact that the kfda means you know how much they should soak up - I don't think there are any regulations for that kind of thing in the UK/USA for the wahm producers.
