Cot by the bed?

My first baby is due in June.I've read the "Contented Little Baby Book" which recommends putting baby in the cot from day one. I was therefore thinking of putting the cot in the nursery (to get it used to sleeping in there in the day) but wonder what i should have by the bed at night time. Will a Moses basket be alright? Or a travel cot? Or what?
Any advice welcome!

moses basket or crib will be fine

DD slept in a moses basket for the first 6 weeks - we then had to move her to a full-size cot cos she was so huge!! An average size baby could probably use moses basket until 3 months or so. Takes up much less space in your bedroom.

I thought the same as you- associate daytime sleep with nursery and quiet but my m/w gave me the best advice, have your lo sleeping in the moses basket in the day, in the livingroom, that way it will get used to the noise, and after the bath milk and bed routine at night, put the moses basket through to your room. We would put the basket on the settee in the day and the stand stayed in the bedroom. Then the baby will have peace and quiet, and if anything like our ds these sleeps will just lengthen and they will know the difference between day and night.
I was also aware that a lot of people have a problem when the baby moves in to the cot (still in parent's room thought) but at 6 weeks it didn't make any difference to our ds. Also when we moved his cot in to his own room at 6months he wasn't bothered. We used to go in his room during the day to play, tidy, put clothes away etc so it wasn't completely strange to him.
I'm not a fan of Gina Ford a la the strict routines etc, but found her guidelins useful, ds is my first baby so I had no idea what even to expect from him really (re sleep) so GF's sleep chart is quite good, you can see how much sleep overall they should expect in one day. I would say though, I think the blackout lining for the daytime is unneccessary (sp), our ds got used to sleeping in the day as I said, and now he goes to his cot awake during the day in his room with the curtains open, for his nap and falls asleep on his own. I think if we had used the blackout linings from day one he would depend on this to get to sleep, then we would be scuppered if ever went away without them.
I ended up thinking ahead and working out what would work for us in the long run, and went with that. It has ceratinly paid off.
Sorry for the ramble but HTH. Good luck.
