Nickname for school?

My son has always answered to his shortened version of his name. All except his grandmother (who he rarely sees) calls him by his proper name.

My issue is. Do I say at his new nursery that my preferred name for him is the short version or is it wise to start using his full name? I just don't know if he'd respond to anything else!

Don't get me wrong, I love both names and they are 'normal' I use his full name on anything official, but his short name on everything else.

WWYD or WDYD??

Thank you

DS1 has a birth certificate name and one that everyone actually calls him which is a variation of it.

On most forms I have filled in education wise I have put the full name and there is another line for 'known as' where i put what everyone calls him.

Tell the Nursery what you want them to call him-it will be fine.

When ds started school I put Alexander on the forms but wrote Alex in the known as box.

If you want Nursery to call him by his full name, then I suggest you call him that same full name at home too. I'm a nursery teacher and have seen the situation you're talking about several times before and it can cause confusion for the child at a time when there are lots of changes. Personally, I would suggest sticking with the name he is most familiar with.
