Would you wake??

Poor DD has being really poorly for 2 days with a stupidly high tempreture and just generally unwell. The GP has just rang to say that the urine sample that we finally managed to get has come back positive for infection so he has prescribed antibiotics. We have just picked them up but obviously DD is fast asleep, so should I wake her to give the first dose or what until she wakes (could be morning or sometime in the night). Many thanks in advance x

I would normally be one for letting them sleep but I think it is important to get the antibiotics in ASAP. Use a syringe and you may be able to get it in without waking her fully

Yes absolutely. Prolonged urine infection can lead to scarring of the kidneys and problems later on, and an ascending infection can become pyelonephritis which is nasty.

Thanks, I will go and give it to her now x

Hi, definitely wake her, the sooner she gets it the better. Also, it helps to space the antibiotics out over the 24 hours to get best effect (roughly same level in blood stream). So if it is twice a day, give with 12 hour interval.

She should respond to antibiotics in 24-48 hours so if you don't see improvement, try to get another urine sample and see OOH. How old is your dd, why was it so difficult to get a urine sample?

Hope she gets better soon.

Hi all, just to update I woke her to give the antibiotics but unfortunately she was sick within minutes, I spoke to NHS direct and they said to try another dose in 4 hours. She has since managed to keep 2 doses down so hopefully she will feel brighter tomorrow.

dikkertjedap she is 20 months and absolutely lost the plot when the nurse tried to put a bag on her under her nappy, she usually uses the potty at home but I think with how poorly she was feeling it was just all too much so that was why it was so hard.
