How much roughly do you spend on your - preteen - dc's clothing per year?

not including shoes or school uniform

Posted another thread recently about where to buy clothes but still pondering this one!

DD (now 10) has so far dressed almost entirely in hand-me-downs / 2nd hand off ebay etc but is starting to express more interest in clothes and wanting to choose her own. When I went to 2ndary, my parents gave me a 'clothes allowance' so that I could choose my own clothes, not that much but I loved being able to pick for myself and decide what my priorities were. So really just wondering what the average was that people spent on children around that age.

(I suspect if dd were spending 'her own' money then she too would become an ebay convert again very rapidly!)

I probably spend £200-£300 a year on DD1 (11)

I get a mixture of highstreet and supermarket

I'm thinking of holding off the clothing allowance until she is 13-14 as I can't afford for her to get it wrong IYKWIM

Hmm, I guess in our case we do get lots of handmedowns, so if dd got it really wrong she'd be able to wear those (as she does right now).

Luckily she's also incredibly cautious and I'm pretty certain at the moment wouldn't buy anything without running it past us. My thought is that if we wait til say 14 then she's much more likely to go and buy random expensive tat . . and that by starting earlier she might get sensible habits?
