Mass food production

moondog · 11/03/2006 20:49

Is killing in the name of religion ever acceptable?

tiredemma · 11/03/2006 20:50

well, interesting you should say that moondog, because while doing research on what to do, i came across some bits on 'war'- war in the name of religion would be very interesting.

provision of drugs to breast cancer sufferers etc ie expensive, unlisenced potentially life prolonging drugs

Who's embryos?

Spagblog · 11/03/2006 20:53

I did one on embryonic stem cell research last month. It seemed quite a good subject, although I also fancied doing theraputic cloning.

My friends picked - improper use of sperm, facial transplants and animal rights

tiredemma · 11/03/2006 20:55

spagblog- are you doing an access course?

Is there ever such a thing as a 'just war'?

Is it acceptable to use 'left-over' frozen embryos for medical research?

Heard an interesting one on the radio the other day... If terrorists (a la 9/11) had hijacked an aircraft and were flying it towards a crowded football stadium (say, the world cup final), would it be acceptable to shoot down the aircraft (taking the terrorists with it, but also, say, 100 innocent people) in order to save the lives of, say, 2000 innocent people in the football stadium? (Sorry for the long question, but an interesting one.)

Spagblog · 11/03/2006 20:57

Yup! Access to Natural Science - you can tell can't you!

DumbledoresGirl · 11/03/2006 20:59

What about something topical? Should a woman have the right to have embryos implanted if her relationship with her partner is over but that is the only way she can have children?

tiredemma · 11/03/2006 21:05

these are all really interesting subjects- i going to have a hard time choosing what to do.

i like the war one, but think that the frozen embryos one is also good.

Designer babies and or Human cloning?

NotQuiteCockney · 11/03/2006 21:07

What on earth is an "improper use of sperm"?

Cloning is a good one - what rights should clones have etc etc. Is therapeutic cloning ok? Reproductive cloning?

Socci · 11/03/2006 21:07

war

Ellbell · 11/03/2006 21:08

The mind boggles, Mercy!

Socci · 11/03/2006 21:08

sorry - didn't read the whole thread!

Flossam · 11/03/2006 21:11

also topical shooting of potential suicide bombers (Ok so Met completely bungled it (to say the least Sad in recent case but in a 'real' suicide bomber case - how much 'evidence' should be required?)

Mercy · 11/03/2006 21:11

Would this be of any help

\link{http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/ethics\a few ideas here}

flutterbee · 11/03/2006 21:14

I think that female circumcision would be a good one to take on, it will definately make your essay stand out as I think most people will automatically do an essay on the current topics that have been mentioned so far.

Spagblog · 11/03/2006 21:28

LOL! We had a giggle at the thought of what an improper use of sperm could be, but apparently the girl used the Boris Becker paternity case, where the woman used sperm gained from oral sex to have a baby.

tiredemma · 11/03/2006 21:35

ia that how the woman got pregnant? bizarre.

OP posts:
DumbledoresGirl · 11/03/2006 21:37

Is that true about the woman who had Becker's baby? How disgusting and scheming of her!

Spagblog · 11/03/2006 21:41

I have no idea...That was how it was explained to me!
I thought improper use of sperm might be putting in a face cream Grin

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 11/03/2006 21:52

tired emma - what subject are you studying? A lot of the things suggested are medical related -are you studying nursing/medecine or is that just coincidence that that it what people have suggested? If you are looking for something medical related how about criteria used for allocating how resources are used in the NHS? ie expensive drugs such as the breast cancer one, the name of which i can't remember, and inter-feron for MS (there must be more). The National Institute for Clinical Excellence produces guidelines which you could use as a starting point.

rarrie · 11/03/2006 21:57

Probably the best thing to do would be something that you could easily resource with quotes / readings etc, but could also bring right up to date with current protests.

EG: Abortion - considering the new South Dakota laws.

Animal Rights - Considering the Oxford lab protests (and throw in a bit of Peter Singer!)

IVF - The current case of that woman who has just been refused to use the sperm of her ex.

I don't know what subject you are doing this for, but I teach Religious studies (Ethics) and our usual advice is to stick to a standard topic, so that you can get your solid foundations but bring it bang up to date with a contemporary issue.

Is it ethical to keep seriously ill babies on indefinite life support even where there is no chance of them living? There are several current cases e.g. Charlotte Wyatt and baby mb.
