Humour Me.....Re-usable Nappies

Folks,

I've been using cloth nappies (close parent pop in nappies) for my 4 month old baby girl since she was born. We've been pretty happy with them (bit leaky when she was very small but I phoned close parent and they were great - sent me some free boosters to use whilst she was still little and now its passed) however I've recently been told she might have uneven hips. It was picked up during a routine check at 3 months due to uneven skin folds but wasn't there (or wasn't picked up) at birth or at the 6 week check. We are now having x rays and ultra sounds to see how bad it is and what we can do about it. I'm not overly worried as I'm told if we get it early its just a case of prevention but someone made the comment in passing last week that her cloth nappies might have done it as they spread her legs out quite far due to their bulkiness. I was a bit dismissive of it but a guilt has now crept over me and so have been using disposable this week until I find someone reliable who I can ask about this.

I'm off to see a pediatrician about it next week but for now, does anyone have any experience of this or even advice on who would know?

Many thanks x

Afaik the opposite is true and cloth nappies are considered to be very good for babies hips and pelvises as they are so stable.

Please don't worry, I'm sure it is nothing you have done Smile

I think this would have happened anyway as otherwise many many children would have this, especially when terries were all that was available. Reusables are actually better for their hips because they are wider. Drop the guilt. It is not your fault Smile

From the real nappy information service

"The design and shape of Real Nappies offers further benefits to your little one. The shape of Real Nappies mean they offer better posture support than disposables, and for the 1% of babies born with Congenital Hip Dislocation, or ?Clicky Hips?, using Real Nappies can prevent the need for a splint, harness or plaster. The design keeps your baby?s legs apart and to the side in what is known as the frog position. For clicky hips, using 2 or 3 terry squares at a time can be recommended (don?t forget you?ll need a bigger wrap!)"

As above poster has said, I've heard of cloth nappies being prescribed for hip problems in small babies as they keep the legs in the frog position.

And put your LO back in washables!

The opposite is true, in the old days the advice for these kind of hip problems was to "double diaper," and use two nappies for added support. There hasn't been a decrease in hip problems since the advent of disposable nappies either, so any associations you hear are probably spurious. I hope the tests go well and your DD isn't in too much discomfort.

who made a comment? I have used cotton nappies every day for all my babies since birth and have done a lot of research, and have never ever heard of a suggestion that nappies might cause uneven hips.
I use a lot of different types of nappy, including the pop ins - I find them one of the slimmest fitting.

I second what everyone else has said

Cheers chaps! Thank you so much! Bath time in 15 mins and she'll be back in re-usables quicker than she can say 'neurotic mummy' ;) xx
