Hoping someone could reassure me if they have been through sonething similar?? My little girl is 7 weeks old and for the past 2 days has been really sleep (which she usually isnt) and not really taking her feeds. She usually takes anywhere between 3-5oz every 3-4hrs and now i am struggling to get 3/4oz down her. This morning she did take 5oz and vomitted wat seemed like the whole thing bk (she had 2 outfit changes) then shes gone back to havin very little and still bringing some back up. Tried giving her cool boiled water which she spits out. Also shes really struggling to bring up any wind (shes on infacol aswell). She literally wakes up for her feed crying. Has small amounts, is sick, screams for about 10 mins then falls back asleep.

Have spoke to the GP n he said aslong as shes got plenty of wet nappies jus keep an eye on her.

Sorry for rambling.

TIA

I'm not an expert on bottles but it does sound a little concerning. I'd go back to the Gp with her tomorrow if she doesn't take more overnight and in the morning. Best they see her before the weekend.

Gilberte · 16/08/2012 21:57

Sounds like she could have a bug. I take it you are sterilizing all your bottles very carefully- does she feel hot/clammy or have a rash. Is she grunting, breathing heavily. Is she a good colour?

If she's not keeping anything down she's at risk of dehydration so definately check she is still wetting her nappies

Is NHS direct still going- they are usually very helpful and will tell you the warning signs to look for and when to seek further medical advice.

I'm not an expert but I would probably take her to the surgery in the morning if she is no better. Go with your instinct and if she seems really poorly to you at any stage you can take her to A&E. It may be she has picked up a tummy bug (poor thing). My GP was really helpful in showing me some signs of dehydration - to do with the skin tone - I can't really describe online, that would appear before the dry nappy stage. Perhaps you could ask your GP about that.

Or it might just be a little cold - some times babies can get really sicky if they have some mucus on their chest, and ear ache can stop them being able to feed properly.

I expect she is fine, but no-one minds you taking a tiny baby in to be on the safe side.

Yeh we sterilise everything we use for her and use dettol on the surfaces which we make up the bottles on. Going to c how she is overnight and tomorrow morning. If no better then definitely going back. Just hate that the GP makes me feel like i am making it up or something. Another thing she has started doing is when i take the bottle out of her mouth to try and wind her when i sot her forward she starts screaming then aswell.

I think she does have a bit of a cold. She grunts a bit when shes sleeping and has been sneezing. I mentioned all this to the GP and just got told to keep an eye on her. I just feel totally useless like i should be doing more for her :-(

These are common signs of dehydration:

?decreased urination (more than six hours without a wet diaper)
?excessive sleepiness or fussiness
?a sunken soft spot
?wrinkled skin
?sunken eyes
?extreme thirst
?dry lips
?crying without tears
?cool, discolored hands and feet

Do let us know how you get on. Most GPs won't mind seeing very young babies at short notice. They should be sympathetic to new mums especially. If it's a virus they may not be able to do anything but they can check ears, take temperature, advise you how to get fluids in etc.

Make sure you mention the excessive sleepiness and keep a record if you can of any other symptoms, how long she's been vomiting for etc. DD may be crying because she's hungry but can't feed due to the cold and she may be vomiting due to the mucus or a bug. Although a virus will normally be over in as few days, dehydration and overheating can be dangerous. If you notice any rashes though or she deteriorates in any way don't be afraid to contact out of hours GP.

I've actually found this on the NHS Direct website(don't think you can call them anymore) so if your GP questions you say you are acting on NHS advice.

www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/diarrhoea-vomiting-children.aspx

"Contact your GP or health visitor urgently for advice if your baby has passed six or more diarrhoeal stools in the past 24 hours, or if your baby has vomited three times or more in the past 24 hours. Get expert advice. If your baby is unwell (is less responsive, feverish or is not passing much urine), or if vomiting has lasted more than a day, get your GP?s advice straightaway "

recent vaccinations???

shellywellybaby1 · 17/08/2012 05:32

Aw thank you so much for the advice. Shes just taken 4 1/2 oz and was sick a little bit. She is a sicky baby anyway so it was probably a normal amount for her. Going to c how she is on her next feed. Luckily shes not had diarrhoea otherwise i would hav definitely had the out of hours GP on the case. She has her 1st lot of vaccinations next week. Altho if shes still got this cold i don't think they would be a good idea? I will see how she is then.

Thanks everyone, i dont feel like i am being completely neurotic now!! Haha!

I'm fairly sure you can still call Nhs direct - I did only a few weeks ago and they were amazing.

Gilberte · 19/08/2012 20:38

I hope your DD is better now. Don't feel you have to update us but was just wondering about you and hoping all is well.

shellywellybaby1 · 19/08/2012 21:33

Hey Gilberte Lydia is doing great now. Think it was just a 24hr thing as shes her usual little self now :-) thank you so much for ur help and advice. Its just nice to be taken serious!!

Oh I'm so glad. Thank you so much for the update. They do get these bugs and whilst they are really scary at the time, you do get used to knowing what to do and what to look for.

They usually get over things very quickly indeed thank goodness.

oscarwilde · 21/08/2012 14:36

A bit late to the party but thought I would share anyway. One tip to measure dehydration is to weigh the nappies (though you need a fairly accurate electronic weighing scales) so you can estimate how much fluid is coming out the other end.

shellywellybaby1 · 22/08/2012 22:06

Yes they are resilient little things hehe. Her nappies are always very heavy - and not through lack of changing it. I change
It before every feed and inbetween aswell (apart from at night) and they r always of a good hefty weight hehe
