Closing bedroom door at night

Ever since DS moved into his own room we've shut his door at night. We have a monitor, and he doesn't mind the door being shut (he's 18 months now). We don't have any stairgates and I shut the door both so that he won't wander out and fall down the stairs and also because we currently live with my parents who have a tendency to stomp upstairs noisily.....

I never even considered that perhaps I shouldn't be shutting the door but I've read a few comments on other threads where people have expressed horror at a child's door being closed. So, what do you do?

We’ve never not shut dc’s doors from as soon as they went in their own rooms. It’s otherwise bright and noisy in our house and it makes sense to sleep with doors closed. We sleep with our doors shut too. If anything, given an intruder or fire, it’s surely safer.

Always shut our DS's door, from baby to toddler. He's 3 now and I wouldn't dream of leaving it open. First sign of light from the landing and he'd be up! I have an audio monitor so I'm not worried about not hearing him.
