going to dentist with a baby

sorry this might sound like a stupid question, but i have toothache and need to go to the dentist. I don't have anyone that can babysit, so I need to take her with me to the dentist. So when I am having my check up, what can I do with my baby, strap her into the buggy and hope she is amused by some toys?? She's nearly one.

I handed mine over to the reception staff who had a lovely time entertaining him!

There will be loads of people around to coo over and entertain your wee one (I may be one of these people when I am at work) :)

The receptionist and dental nurse looked after my DD even though she was asleep in the car seat!

I have just taken mine with me in the pushchair and they looked out the window. My dentist has a lovely garden though.

RikersBeard · 15/08/2012 07:53

I take mine with me, dentists will be used to it. Last time I went I had DS2 in the buggy (7months) and DS1 (2.9) sitting on the waiting chair while I was checked. Then it was DS1s turn.

Yes take toys. But there will be lots to look at so you may not need them. I remember taking DS1 when he was about 1. He was happy till I had to go upstairs for x rays and left him downstairs with the dentist. I could hear him roaring from 2 floors up, and I came back to find a panicky looking dentist desperately rocking the buggy!! Was fine though :)

OhTinky · 15/08/2012 07:54

I had toothache when DD was about 9months, the hardest part was navigating the steps into the surgery. I had 3 repeat visits and a wisdom tooth extraction too - joy!

DD stayed in her pram in the room with me, and was able to even sit on my lap in the dentist chair (somehow she wasn't in a grab everything in sight mood that day).

Just go stocked with toys and snacks and hope your treatment is quick!

RikersBeard · 15/08/2012 07:55

Also I took DS2 to have my haircut last week. A full cut and blow. He was fascinated , then the hair dryer made him doze off. Nobody minded :)

I took DS to the dentist with me when he was 6 months old and wheeled his pushchair into the treatment room. One of the receptionists came in and entertained him for a while :-)

cupcake78 · 15/08/2012 07:55

Not a problem, just take her and their will be lots of people desperate to help. Don't think about it too much just do it, take some things for her to play with and it'll work out just fine.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 15/08/2012 07:56

Just don't worry, even if your child cries it willbe water off a ducks back too, all the staff will be well used to it..I'm sure she will be happy though!

ggirl · 15/08/2012 07:57

I took ds once ...he must have been 18m-2.
I gave him some white choc buttons while I was in the chair to keep him quiet. Got a right telling off from the dentist....she said I could have at least given him crisps whilst he was in the dentists!
Pah! Wasn't as if he had them everyday fgs!

DoodleAlley · 15/08/2012 07:57

I just strapped DS into his pushchair. I had a filling replaced so it wasn't quick and the hygienist helped if he got fractious. They are used to making these kinds of things work. I think the key is having a bag of good toys that you or someone else can fish out something new when needed without having to rifle thru nappies and purses and keys!

MrsHowardRoark · 15/08/2012 07:58

I had to have a broken tooth fixed last week and the receptionist took my DD for the half an hour appointment. She had a great time playing with various toothbrushes and model teeth!

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 15/08/2012 08:06

No no don't take sweets to give while in there, all the dentists I know would tell you off too

lalaloopylou · 15/08/2012 08:18

My dentist encourages me to bring my dc, says it's good to get him used to the room and seeing what the dentist actually does so when it's time for him to have his checkup he doesn't freak out too much

cloudhands · 15/08/2012 13:59

thanks everyone, you've all reassured me! Sometimes doing something for the first time with a baby can seem a little worrisome, but of course we're all in the same boat Smile

i took 11m dd with me to the dentist on monday

i strapped her into her buggy, gave her a rice cake and a buggy book (attached to buggy) and hoped for the best.

it was fine

but o have to have a filling Sad... and have a 20min appt.... so have (for the first time ever) asked a friend to have her for that appt in a couple of weeks

Methe · 15/08/2012 14:32

Chocolate buttons are your friend.

blacktreaclecat · 16/08/2012 03:27

Fine to take for a check up. Gets them used to it - ride in the chair and a
sticker. Although at our practice we are very busy so you wouldn't get staff babysitting.
Please don't take for treatment. Still traumatised by trying to do difficult extractions with a 2 year old screaming the place down in the corner of the surgery. It isn't helpful for you, the dentist or your child.

recall · 16/08/2012 03:40

I once had treatment with a 4, 2 and 6 month old with me. I got the 4 year old colouring, the 2 year old sat on me, and the 6 month old had a bottle wedged with a fusion ( not ideal, but closely watched ) The staff are usually pleased to help out if it goes wrong.

I know this thread is old. But my dentist has asked me not to bring my 1 year old for the next appointment (which is next week). I've got to have a few fillings. DH is at work and I'm panicking about getting childcare as he's never been away from me.

Sounds like you'll have to reschedule for a day when DH can look after your little one. If that's the policy then that's unfortunately how it is 😕
