How to teach my little boy to lie down

I'm looking for some advice.
My DS is a brilliant sleeper, from the age of 2.5months he's slept through the night, even when we moved him in to his own room that didn't seem to effect him.

He's now 9 months old, crawling for the last month and now trying to climb, the thing is now its interfering with his sleep, he goes to bed at usual time, and then anywhere between midnight at 4am he sits up, I don't know if this is happening because he's waking up naturally or if its because he's sitting up in his sleep and then waking up (i think its more likely the latter) unfortunately he doesn't seem to know how to lie back down.

He's a very active little boy, who spends most of his time outside, even if its raining we're out walking the dogs so there's not much more we can do to tire him out, he eats well and isn't hungry when he wakes, the moment we put him back down he's straight to sleep, which leads us to think he's sitting up in his sleep.

Is there anyway we can teach him to lie down or prevent him from sitting up whilst he's still a sleep?

thank you in advance

Sounds pretty normal to me. Is he crawling yet? It could just be he is ready for a developmental leap and will start crawling or walking soon.

Have you got the Wonder Weeks book or visited the website?

Thanks jilted, he is crawling and trying to stand by grabbing hold of things.

I haven't heard if that book or website so will have a look when he goes down for his afternoon nap.

Sounds like he is ready to start walking, or at least trying too. At nine months my DS would walk along the settee, but couldn't pull himself up.

You can read about the mental developmental leap at 9 months here, and about the 9 month sleep regression here.

It's hard work, because they have a busy brain which won't let them sleep, a busy body trying to practise new skills which won't let them sleep, and often teething too. It does get better on its own though. :)
