I haven't been concerned at all about this until now (he's got lovely chubby legs and has always followed the 50th centile), but this morning when i told my CM that he always seems to be on the hunt for food my CM remarked that my DS doesn't have as much as his friends in his pack up and now i'm wondering if i'm not packing him enough to eat. He grazes a lot, given the opportunity (he doesn't like sitting still for long and is extremely active) but i always thought he had quite a large appetite. A typical day's food would consist of:

Cereal (2x weetabix, though he's no longer eating as much breakfast)
Snack - one banana
Lunch - today he has a salad of ham (once slice), a couple of slices of choritzo, a few olives, a few cherry tomatoes, a boiled egg, a slice of cheese cut into about 8 cubes, 2 breadsticks and a mini pork pie. Dessert = 1 yoghurt.
He'll have another fruit snack later - a satsuma or some raisins/ grapes, strawberries or whatever
Dinner - baked potato with baked beans and cheese, or tuna and sweetcorn (he actually usually has anything we've cooked for ourselves the previous day, including roast dinners, lasagne etc. - the portion sizes are maybe two medium sized potatoes, a slice of quiche, plus veg)
Dessert - custard or rice pudding, sometimes a little chocolate as a treat

I cannot fault him for the variety of what he eats - he rarely turns his nose up at anything. And he will tell us when he's eaten enough, which usually only just falls short of what is on his plate (maybe a tablespoon of food).

Is this an ususually small amount?

It sounds very similar to my DS, right down to the bit about being very active and not wanting to sit still for long Grin

I think that grazing is the more natural way to eat. I also think that different children are more efficient at processing food - I know two 3yr olds who are very similar in build and energy levels but one eats like a horse and the other eats like a sparrow.

Is he very hungry when he comes home from CM? If so then perhaps you need to bung in a couple of extra bits in his lunchbox, if not then I wouldn't worry too much.

Sounds like a full, varied and nutritious diet.

My boy, 24 months, will have days where he eats a little less than this, and days when my mind actually boggles as to where he is storing all the food he has consumed. He will let you know if he needs more, but certainly to me the diet and portions look great

He eats more than my 24 month old, who is somewhere between the 25th and 50th percentiles. Yesterday he had:
One weetabix with milk for breakfast, some diluted orange juice
Small bowl of pesto cheese tortellini for lunch (maybe 8 pieces of tortellini?)
For a snack he had an apple and a cup of milk (100ml)
Dinner he had 1/3 chicken thigh, a mouthful of sweetcorn, a couple of small new potatoes and a yoghurt.

This more that 2 and half year old eats here. So sounds fine to me

Yep today
1/2 bowl mini oatibix plus milk to drink
Mini crossiant in cafe mid morning
Half philli sandwich, 1/2 avocado, bit of cheese
No afternoon snack as didn't want but usually fruit
Chicken and bacon carbonara and veggies ( small portion of everything) plus frozen yogurt

Average day but sometimes eats more other times impossible
