Nappy rash in newborn

My breastfed 5 day old ds has lots of dirty nappies (10+ a day?) Firstly is this normal and secondly what do I do about his sore bottom?! Am only using cotton wool and water and am changing him as soon as it needs doing (very noisy so there's no mistaking when it needs doing!) but he has a little bit of nappy rash. What (if anything) should I put on it? I have very sensitive skin as does ds1 so I know I will need to ber very careful.

Waitrose Bottom Butter! It's olive oil and chamomile oil with a vanilla scent and no nasty stuff. I smear it all over DDs bottom after a change and it protects it a treat (her minor nappy rash also cleared up).

Apart from that, metanium cream comes highly recommended I believe.

It's normal to have lots of dirty nappies for bf babies.

sudocrem is fantastic - i started a tub when dd was born and can only just see the bottom now - she is 6months bts. clears up rashes within a couple of days and has been around for years so am guessing its perfectly fine to use. I got a little tub in the bounty bag from hospital, brilliant for changing bag when out and I just refill it every now and then

oh, and when she was bf she had lots of dirty nappies - once on formula down to 1 or 2 and now she is weaned usually 2 apart from days when she has prunes Grin

My Breatsfed DS had horrific nappy rash - actually more like laseration in his skin.

Sudocreme, cottonwool & water, airtime on a towel in a warm room helped heal it up.

Also, my DS was the same. Every nappy was dirty. A lady I know of's son (breastfed) wouldn't poo for 12 days, would go of his milk and then poo for England and be ravenous for days! Anything goes when your breastfeeding!

another shout here for sudocrem, I love it, ds sometimes has a sore bottom and I put it on after bath at bedtime and it looks better by morning

gingernutlover · 09/03/2006 17:49

also, I let dd have naked naps - just strip cot and lay towel on the matress - or one of those travel blankets with plastic backing
