Sorry if there's another similar thread (kinda hoping I'm not the only one with this issue!)

My DS was playing in the sand today and he dropped his spade, he looked at me with a definite glint in his eye and said "fuck it", I ignored him (with my face becoming redder than a tomato) then he said it again! OMG what am I to do, did I do the right thing and ignore it? Or should I have removed him from playground and told him off or punished him? He seemed to know that the word he was saying was not allowed by the way he looked at me before he said it.

As for some background, my husband and I do not swear. I have SIL who swears quite a bit (her DS also same age does not seem to have repeated anything she says) I have never heard her swear when my DS has been with her but it's possible that she has said the odd word in my absence.

I worried that he'll keep saying it over and over until he's expelled from nursery :-(

Please tell me I'm over reacting and this is 'relatively' normal learning behaviour

It's a total non issue. Ignoring it is the right thing to do.

As for where he heard it from...your sil, or someone on the bus, or tv, or anywhere!

It's normal.

Probably a bit late now but, if it happens again, ask your DS 'who says that?' and see what the answer is. It may surprise you.

Good idea Cogito, I will ask (hoping I wont need to though :-))

DN once told her nursery teacher 'i can't be arsed' teacher told us most kids do it at some point. i think she got the can't be arsed from me i'm ashamed to say i hadn't even realised i said it around her but it is something i say Blush don't judge me!

A conversation with my ds today (he's 4.9 so a lot older then yours):
DS (whispering): "mummy I need to tell you something"
Me "what darling"
DS: "fucking and frigging are really bad swear words"
Me (shocked at where the bloody hell he's got those words from): "yes darling they really are horrible. Don't say them again"
DS: "Ok mummy"

I mean, really??? Where did he get it from, we really don't swear in front of the kids!?!

Some good ideas here, but I'm not so sure about ignoring it. If it doesn't go away soon, you may want to tackle it. I tried ignoring DD's rude comments at around that age, and praising the good, but after she'd called her GPs and also the window cleaner stupid, I decided we had to have words with her!
