Anyone else starting an OU degree this autumn?

If all works out with my financial support application, I will be starting a Psychology degree with the OU in October.

I'm really looking forward to it but am also a little worried how I'll cope having a baby DD and studying.

Is anyone else starting soon? Would be nice if we could have a little support thread on here.

I've received my study materials today! Had a quick look through them and it's only a little bit daunting! Some of the advice on how to study and answer assignments is the same as how I remember being taught at A-level but other things (e.g. how to quote properly) are new to me.

How many credits a year is everyone doing? I'm doing 60 per year which at the moment seems really slow but I just don't have time for full time study.

Makingmama · 19/08/2012 08:33

I've received my study materials too!! I'm pretty daunted by the amount of work that I see before me TBH! But also very excited and can't wait to get a desk sorted and get started Grin

I'm doing 90 credits this year. Starting with AA100 (60 credits) in Oct, then A151 starting in May (30 credits), so I will have maybe 4 or so weeks overlap of courses I think, but hoping it will be manageable. I'm hoping to have a degree in 4 years really, but that may turn into 5.

I have 3 young dc (4, 3 and 1yo), but hoping this works in my favour to get study in during the evenings come 7pm.

My box has arrived too Shock, so early this year.

They are sitting there looking at me guilt tripping me into reading my set books.

Ha, yes my box is doing the same thing to me Grin...but I'm ignoring it! Going to try and get some 'light' fiction in first!

MrsHuxtable · 21/08/2012 14:32

Very jealous that some of you have already received their boxes. But then, I'm still on holiday til next week so can't complain.
I'm doing 60 points this year, starting of with a 30 point module and then adding on another 30 pointer in February. Hope the overlap won't be too bad as I'll be back to work part-time from February with a 1 year-old and then, hopefully, on my way to being pregnant again which made me really sick last time.

I received one of my boxes yesterday > lots of reading - and need to get set books too!

Good luck to you all, I am just finishing my open degree with the OU, I am half way through my final assignment. It is addictive though, and I have just signed up to do the level 1 understanding the autism spectrum course. It was just a few weeks ago that I was looking forward to finishing and having a break, it's been 6 years of nearly solid study (took a 3 month break when ds2 was born), but like I say, 'tis addictive Smile

Im starting U101 in October followed by MST121 & T173....

Fucking Scary Shit!!!!!

Inthepotty · 30/08/2012 21:42

AA100 starter here too! Not until Feb tho, have got all my set reading ready to pile though and spoke to OU last week and my materials should be here soonish.

Doing BA in Humanties Eng Lang pathway.

Autumn11 · 31/08/2012 08:08

Hi MrsHuxtable

I am doing the exactly the same courses as you! I have a little boy of 3 and hopefully will have another next year so didn't want to overload myself too much. The overlap in the courses will be good practice for future 60 credit modules. Very excited about starting now, best of luck.

MrsHuxtable · 16/09/2012 22:46

Hi Autumn,
great to see you're doing the same courses as me. Are you pregnant yet? I'm hoping to get pregnant again in the first half of next year (doubtful it's gonna happen though due to bfeeding DD).

How is everyone else?

I have finally received my study materials as well. Only 3 weeks til courses start.

Hi all,

Nice to see lots of Ou students floating around, I'm starting my fourth 60 point course this year on my English lit and Lang degree. I've just finished a230 had my 4th dc in my 'summer holidays' and back to it with children's lit, slightly terrified as he won't even be a month old when I restart!

looking forward to this course though and it's my first level 3 so the beginning of the end for me. It's a great excuse for the stationary addicts among us and I quite like the guilt free book shopping too Grin I've only just made it through registration so I'm still waiting for my textbooks and it's torturous, very jealous of those who already have their books.

For those who are new and not anti Facebook have you searched your course code? Often there are study groups set up for the year which I've found invaluable in the past.

Good luck everyone

Hi Grin

I started my degree (Social Science) in May, I'm now 3/4 of the way through my first course and start my 2nd one in November. I won't lie - if you're not good at personal motivation like me then it can be hard to get into a routine of studying and I have found it helpful to designate myself study time rather than as and when because that usually ended up being the evening when I was too tired to even focus on the books. For me it's weekday mornings when the boys are at school and DD is at nursery. There are times I found it really really hard to keep motivated (like the entire summer holidays - am a lone parent so it was hard to stay on track) but I'm really enjoying it and enjoying the opportunity to have something "for me" that will hopefully improve things for all of us in the long run. Having looked ahead I think all my future courses will miss the summer hols thankfully!

SummerRain · 18/09/2012 19:34

I'm halfway through an environmental science degree. I started when youngest was 8 months and it is doable. Good luck Smile

JeuxDEnfants · 18/09/2012 19:36

I started dse141 in may and have 4 more starting this year.

SwedishEdith · 18/09/2012 19:48

Received my final module books today but can't look as have an EMA to complete first Would certainly second seeking out the FB support groups. I've found them to be much more accessible than the OU forums.

Hi,

I am very curious about the psychology degree. For those of you who have started, how is it going?
