An experienced mum of three, my friend has recommended I give my almost 9week old a dose of calpol 2mths+ beforehand to take the edge of pain.

Is this a good idea? My mam says i shold buy it for afterwards - what do I have to watch for etc?

My HV said you can use it if the baby develops a fever. I've put off DD2s jabs till she's 16 weks, however, b/c it's possible DD1 is vaccine-damaged, so she can use Calpol now.

We were told just to use it afterwards if necessary but ds was fine anyway so we didn't bother

we were told just to give a small dose if a slight fever develops or the baby is overly "cranky" IYKWIM.

i usually give it afterwards before bed unless they're showing signs of illness. TBH, the only pain she'll feel (hopefully) at the time of the jab is the pinprick and any side effects will occur later so Calpol wouldn't take away the needle iyswim!

GP will actually give you a prescription when you go for the jabs if you ask your HV (or whoever is doing them)

Calpol won't really help with the pain of the jabs imo, it's good if they get a temperature afterwards. If you have some form of comforter with you (breast, bottle or dummy!) they'll forget about it very quickly. With DS2 and DD I delayed their feeds so they were 'due' when they had their jabs, and just fed them straight afterwards (Pro BF HV, so happy for me to do the rest of the paperwork, and have a chat whilst bfing!)

alexsmum · 07/03/2006 20:38

our gp said to give it beforehand and the immunologist we see always gives it straight away.
i'd give it.

i think they'll still do it with a cold but if you're not happy, just put it off for a while till he's better.

pablopatito · 08/03/2006 10:06

Doesn't fever and other symptons appear quite some time after the injection? If so, what's the point of giving Calpol before - won't it have worn off by the time the fever appears?

Anyway, we were ready to give DS calpol if he needed it, but he was fine so we didn't bother. The injection didn't bother him (except for about half-a-second), and he didn't have any fever.

Surely its best to wait and see if they need Calpol?
